“Too many. Gabe bet I couldn’t out-drink him. I won.”

“Something tells me you won’t think so come tomorrow morning.”

He plopped on the bed. “He likes you. And he never likes anyone.”

“Guess I must be a grump magnet. It’s funny how all three of you are so different.” Gabe and Nic had the pretty-boy, classic good looks, and that’s where the resemblance ended. Nic was sunshine, Gabe was night. And last, but not least, there was my dark Thor… The thunder.

“I’m the black sheep.” He lay down and put his arms around me, hugging me tight.

This is what I’d missed. Just touching him.

“No, you’re not. Black sheep means you’re not accepted by your family. And yours loves you and are proud of you and support you.” Unlike my parents.

“That’s true.”

Speaking of which. “You know, you can stay here with your family tomorrow while I go see mine.” It was a couple-hour drive. “I can borrow your truck.”

“Why would I bow out?”

“Because you want to spend more time with your family?”

He shrugged. “I want to see where you grew up and what about all that shit you said about them being the grandparents and therefore getting to know me?”

“You won’t like it.”

“Are you embarrassed by me?”

Damn. “Of course not. But my parents can be critical.”

“It’ll be fine. Now get naked.”

Didn’t have to tell me twice.

The next morning I woke alone in bed and immediately wondered when Leo had gone to his own room. After taking a quick shower and dressing in jeans and a sweatshirt, I puttered downstairs in search of caffeine.

“Good morning, Addy.” Leo’s mom looked lovely in a navy rich-person leisure suit, the kind you’d see on a prime-time television soap opera but didn’t know anyone in real life actually wore one. It looked classy on her.

“Good morning.”

“Do you drink coffee? Or we have espresso or tea. Gerard and Samantha went to pick up breakfast.”

“Coffee would be lovely, but I can get it.”

She waved me off. “You’re a guest. Please sit. Cream and sugar?”

“Both, please.”

“How did you sleep?”

Like a log after incredible sex with her son. I hoped my blush didn’t make it obvious. “Good, thank you.”

She smiled as she delivered my coffee. “It’s good to see Leo so happy. I worried about him when he returned from Iraq.”

“I can’t imagine what you went through, knowing he was over there.”

She let out a shuddered breath. “Most of the time he couldn’t tell me where he was or what he was doing, which I must admit was probably for the best. Although I remain a proud mom, I sure am happy to have him home and out of the service.”

“I can only imagine.”
