“She said you broke up with her?”

“I don’t want to talk about it.” It hurt too much.

Gabe sighed. “She led us here by tracking your phone.”

I’d forgotten she had the ability. “She’ll get over me and find someone new.” The thought had me swigging back the remaining liquid in my glass.

“We were worried about you,” Nic whispered, emotion in his tone.

“I’ll be fine. I always am.”

“Are you though?” Gabe asked seeing right through my bullshit.

I wasn’t. I hadn’t been since Iraq.

“She told you, didn’t she?” The question was just how much.

Gabe nodded. “In her defense, we were worried, which in turn worried her. I suspected the nightmares, though, from when we stayed at Mom and Dad’s together. At the time, I didn’t want to make things awkward by bringing it up, but maybe I should have. Maybe seeing someone who can help is what you need?”

“I don’t know what I need.”

“What would you say to one of your guys who came to you and told you they were suffering from nightmares after their last tour in Iraq?” Nic asked.

We all knew the answer. I’d tell them to go talk to someone who could help them.

I stood up from the table, the room swaying at my sudden action. “I’ll figure it out.” What I needed was a plan. But first I needed to get sober.

ADDISON

Later that night, Dominic texted that they’d arrived at the location indicated by my phone and Leo was okay. He didn’t expand on that information, nor had I expected him to. Leo was with his brothers. Right where he needed to be.

The next morning I went into the office feeling restless. I wondered how long I could keep hoping Leo would change his mind. I was in the supply room in the afternoon when Nic walked in. “Hey, Addy.”

“Hey, you’re back. How’s Leo?”

He shut the door for privacy. “He’s fine. He asked that I give you this.”

I took the padded envelope from his hand, the unasked question in my eyes.

“I don’t know what’s in it, just that he wrote you a note and asked that I coordinate the weeks you’ll be here versus San Diego so he can be in the other office.”

My heart sank at Leo asking his brother to keep us from ever working together again.

Nic shuffled his feet. “I’m sorry, Addy. I keep thinking maybe he’ll see a counselor and get some help, and then you two could be together again.”

‘Be together’ again? Clearly, Leo hadn’t told him we were married or there was probably another set of divorce papers in the package Dominic handed me. It seemed like our marriage hadn’t mattered enough to mention.

“Maybe he’ll change his mind about you two—”

“But Leo doesn’t change his mind, does he?” My voice was thick with emotion. It was sinking in that this was really over. And there was nothing I could do about it.

“Shit, I shouldn’t have done this at work. I’m sorry.”

“No, it’s okay. I’m, um, going to head into his office to read the note, okay?”

He nodded. “Okay. For the record, he’s torn up about this. I don’t know if it helps to hear.”
