“How would you like to have rabbit for dinner?” He asks and I turn around and scrunch my nose at him in disgust.
“Is this another joke?”
Everest gives me the faintest of smiles before he swings open the door of a dark wooden cabinet and pulls out a Remington. Holy fuck. He’s actually being serious.
“I’m not joking.” Everest pulls open the cabin door and motions for me to join him with his left hand. “Come on, I’m going to teach you basic hunting skills. I wasn’t in the Marines for nothing.”
“Are we actually going to kill them?”
Everest nods and then waves me over again. “Come on. It’ll be dark soon and we don’t wanna get caught out in the dark there.”
Even though I don’t want to, I quietly follow Everest and close the cabin door shut behind me.
Two: EVEREST
“Do you want to try?” I ask Lexi as we walk over to the dead animal on the ground.
I’ve already killed a rabbit and it’s quite a fat one, so it’ll probably last us tonight and tomorrow, but I can see the curiosity in my daughter’s eyes as she gets down on her knees before me and studies the animal.

“Yep. You wanna try both? It’s really easy.” I watch as she brushes her palms on her knees before she stands up and glances at the Remington in my hands.
“As long as I don’t have to help you prepare the meals,” she says in a very serious tone, and then the corner of her lips curls up into a small smile.
Things are still awkward between us even though we’ve known each other for three weeks now. But it’s not because she’s awkward, it’s because I’m still trying to get used to the idea of having my daughter around full-time
“Okay follow me,” I tell Lexi and move through the trees. We’re both quiet as I scan the grounds for another cottontail.
It takes a few minutes, but I soon spot movement near a lone tree. “Come here.” I motion for Lex to join me and when she gets in front of me, I hand her the Remington.
“Don’t make any sudden movements,” I whisper.
“You want to be as quiet as possible.”
Getting behind her, I place my arms around hers and guide her right hand to where the trigger is.
“Breathe,” I say and she takes a deep breath before moving back and pressing herself against me.

At that very second, Lex pulls the trigger and I watch as she gets the rabbit on its side right before it can move.

Lexi turns around and hands me the Remington. Her eyes are even brighter in the snow and her pale cheeks and cute button nose are red from the cold.
“I’ve never done something so exhilarating before,” she says. “I almost thought I wasn’t going to get it.”
“Well, I mean I did not help in any way,” I tease her. “It’s fine, I don’t need any thanks.”
