Something delightfully confused in his voice said he was probably wandering around his living room and frowning at the walls again.

“Yes, you told me that and I know just how to help you.” I only hoped it wouldn’t frustrate him in the long run. “It’s going to take me a little while to hang up the pictures and get everything organized. Are you going to watch or are you going to work while I do it?”

The silence on the other end stretched out entirely too long.

Just as we were getting to the point where I was trying to decide what to apologize for, he whispered adorably. “I don’t think I’m supposed to do that. It would be rude.”

Laughter was my first response, but I managed to hold it in for the most part. “No, cutie. It’s not rude if I’m doing stressful things that you don’t want to watch. You have two options. You can work in your studio or you can have little time and color while I turn on a movie for you.”

I had a feeling he could watch every Transformers movie one after the other and thoroughly enjoy himself.

“It’s not rude?” There was still something stressed in his voice, but I wasn’t sure if it was about the pictures or just not wanting to upset me.

“No. I am bossy enough that I can take over your house and not feel awkward at making myself at home.” That got a giggle out of him, so it seemed like I was heading in the right direction. “I’m also bossy enough to give you a tour of your own home when the work is done.”

It was going to be too big a project to do during one date, so we were going to spread it out…and if I used it to make sure he was comfortable with me in his life, I wasn’t going to feel guilty over it.

His grandmother had bought me for him after all.

Chapter Six

Camden

“No peeking.” Daddy’s voice boomed through the house even though I’d been quiet as a mouse.

How had he heard?

Inching back toward my studio, I pretended to start walking back toward the living room. “Did you say something?”

He just scoffed.

Shoot.

Sighing and maybe pouting a tiny bit, I wandered back into my studio. I’d gotten a lot accomplished while he’d been busy hanging pictures. I’d thought I’d be too distracted to work because I usually found people in the house bad distracting.

Daddy was good distracting, though.

He was…he was just nice to have around.

Even when he was making noise.

I liked hearing him mumble to himself and the soft classical music he’d started playing on his phone at some point had me humming along, which had added a depth to the painting I hadn’t expected. It’d started out slightly dark, but working on it with Daddy around had subtly changed it.

But now I was done…and bored…and I was getting hungry and I wanted attention.

He kept saying he was almost done, but he’d been almost done for nearly twenty minutes and my little side thought that was forever…not that I was trying to let my little side out, but he was very excited.

Daddy was here.

Daddy had brought us a special lunch.

Daddy was making the walls not blank anymore.

Daddy hadn’t made me pick out anything to do with the pictures.

It was all very exciting and very distracting.

“Alright, I’m all done.” Daddy’s voice was filled with laughter that I ignored because I was so tired of being patient.

I was so tired of it my little side popped out.

“I’ve been very patient, Daddy.” Mostly.

But I’d been good enough that I had to make sure he knew it.

Flying out of my studio, I raced down the hall where Daddy was waiting. He’d been so wonderful he hadn’t even asked to see it because he knew it was still private. He’d just waited down the hallway and called out for me even when he’d said I needed a drink of water because I’d been working too long.

He always knew everything.

“I was so good.” He laughed when I crashed into him. “I was patient too and I got lots of work done.”

Little me thought it would be so much fun to show him all my projects, but big me thought that sounded scary.

“You were very patient and a very good boy.” Daddy kissed my forehead and knew I was little without me having to say it.

He was so smart.

“I was.” But my patience was all gone. Poof. “Can I see the rest now?”

The only ones I’d seen were some pretty sketches I’d gotten from a street artist in Italy. I’d put them in the back of a closet for so long I’d almost forgotten about them until they’d shown up in the long hallway that led from the sunroom I used as my studio to the rest of the house.
