Like a lot of work.

“Good.” But I frowned and couldn’t help worrying. “But isn’t that hard or something? It comes in the cans. I can open those.”

I just never remembered to go down that aisle. There were always so many things to explore and look at, and somehow I always ran out of time or patience before I found the soup.

He squeezed my hand and leaned over to kiss my head. “Let’s try making it this time and that way you’ll be able to pick out exactly what kinds of vegetables go in it.”

Oh, I hadn’t thought about that.

“I like carrots.” The more I thought about it the more interesting the idea was. “Can I have ABC noodles? I like celery. I know some people don’t like it, but as long as it’s not stringy, I like it.”

That made Daddy very pleased. He gave me a big smile and looked like he was the best Daddy in the world. I was going to end up with a lot of veggies just because it made him feel like a good Daddy.

Shoot.

“See?” His pleased grin was still firmly in place as he squeezed my hand. “We’re going to find a lot of good things for me to make you for dinner too. Maybe lasagna?”

He liked complicated things.

“Do you know what makes the cheesy middle parts? It’s not cottage cheese no matter what the internet says.” I’d tried that once. It’d been one time too many. “Oh, and we have to read labels because sometimes cheese says cheese but it’s not real cheese and it tastes weird.”

That’d been a surprise too.

Hmm, maybe we should just get one from the freezer section?

Daddy laughed. “You look so worried. I promise we will pick the right ingredients and everything will be fine.”

Daddies were very confident…it was sometimes frustrating but it was part of their charm. “Yes, it’s going to be fine.”

Daddy just laughed…that wasn’t scary at all.

Chapter Twenty-One

Gray

He was up to something…if we’d been in the grocery store parking lot, I’d have thought I was getting another blow job, but this was different. Leaning against the wall that led into the living room, I raised one eyebrow. “You look very guilty, baby.”

I just couldn’t figure out why, especially since it’d been several days since the grocery store shenanigans and we didn’t have any plans to go again until next week. I’d made sure to buy enough so that I wouldn’t have to drag him there any time soon.

Camden’s attempt at a wide-eyed look as he paced around the room didn’t help. “I ate breakfast and didn’t have cookies for lunch, honest.”

The fact that his brain jumped right to food left me with questions…like what exactly had he eaten for breakfast and if ice cream had been involved with lunch. It hadn’t taken long to realize that his tell was answering questions very specifically.

But that didn’t feel quite right for what the problem was.

“I’m glad.” Coming back into the living room where he’d been bouncing between coloring and pacing and asking me my thoughts on which Harry Potter house I would belong in, I sat down on the couch and opened my arms. “Cuddle time.”

“That’s not fair.” He pouted, still not sure if he was little or just dramatic. “I’m not ready to tattle on myself yet.”

Laughing would not be the right Daddy move in this situation, but I loved the stuff that came out of his mouth.

“I didn’t ask you to tell on yourself, baby.” I did my best to ignore how cute the slow shuffle he did as he walked around the coffee table was, and I managed not to smile as he curled up in my lap. “I just wanted to hold my boy and see how his day went.”

Because he’d been twitchy all evening.

Sighing, he rested his head on my shoulder. “It went fine…until the doorbell rang.”

It sounded like the first line in a horror novel, but I was patient because I knew he’d eventually get to the point. “I’m sorry you got distracted.”

It was the best I could come up with, but it had him nodding, so I thought I’d done pretty well.

“It was very distracting because the FedEx guy is always very chatty even though he smells weird like the people do downtown sometimes, and he gave me my box but then I realized what was in the box and I started blushing, and he was looking at me weird and now I’m pretty sure the FedEx guy thinks I’m either a drug dealer or ordering sex toys online.” As the flood of words came to a slightly abrupt end, I wasn’t sure what to say.

“Did you order sex toys online?” In my defense, it was the last thing he’d talked about, so it was the first thing on my mind.

My question had him sighing and then trying to hide a giggle. “No, Daddy. You do that.”
