“Definitely not,” the girls say in unison.

I bite my lip. “I don’t know. What if they are going out? The two of them make way more sense than he and I did.”

Malia scoffs. “Why? Because she’s an actress? That doesn’t mean anything. Mason is a tech guy, and I’m a designer.”

“It’s just a thing. He should be with someone who gets his lifestyle, who wants to go out and walk red carpets and whatever. I’ll never be that person.”

“You’re overthinking it. Trust me, Leila, Spencer would NEVER go on a date with Candy. If they’re going to dinner, which I doubt, it would be about the movie they’re filming and nothing else. Spencer doesn’t like her.”

“I want to believe that. But everyone keeps saying she’d be good for his career. What if he is starting to realize that?”

This time, it’s Abby who pipes up. “From what I know of him, he wouldn’t do that. Not just your stories, but like the fact that he has been pretty lowkey since his show ended. It just doesn’t seem right.”

“He dated me for his career. Well, his reputation. But that was the whole point of this pretend thing.”

“Okay, fair point, but still. I just don’t think he would date Candy. Not after what you guys said.”

“I agree. I’ve known Spencer for a long time, and I can say for sure he wouldn’t do this. You’re different. Plus, he told you he likes you for real. He wouldn’t say that and then go out with Candy. She’s just a brat who thinks she can get her way, but she won’t.”

My friends make me feel better, but I still don’t know for sure if I believe all this. I mean, I want to think Spencer wouldn’t do that, but my anxious brain is telling me not to trust him or anyone.

Sometimes it sucks having anxiety.

“Even with all this assurance, Spencer is still a movie star. He’s a celebrity, and I’m an interior designer. We’re not compatible, not really. We’d be fooling ourselves to pretend that we are.”

“It’s a self-fulfilling prophecy,” Abby says excitedly. “You think it won’t work, so you ended things before you could find out for sure!”

I sigh. “You and your psychology classes.”

She laughs. “You know how much I love it. Seriously, though, it’s the truth. You need to change your mentality. Instead of ‘it’s going to fail,’ try thinking, ‘it could work.’”

“That’s easier said than done.”

“I know, but I want you to try. I think Spencer has been good for you, and I’m sorry I ever said to end things.”

“I agree. We should all work on it. Maybe we can do these calls weekly?” Malia suggests.

“I would love that!”

We all agree to set up weekly calls or video chats and spend each week working on ourselves. I’m not sure positivity will be my thing, but if Abby wants me to give it a shot, I will for her.

After we hang up, I finish my croissant and my coffee at the little red table overlooking the street where my office is. I consider not going back to the shop, but all my stuff is there, so with another cleansing breath, I head over to Frills West.

“Took you long enough,” Clementine comments. “Were you hanging out with Spencer? Maybe a quickie?”

“No, I was just getting coffee and having a conversation with some friends. Sorry it took so long.”

“Wow, you are boring. Can I forward you a couple of potential clients? They said they’re friends of that coffee shop owner.”

“Sure, but you can take some if you want.”

“We’ve had an influx. Some of my connections have panned out as well. I’m full. Been talking about home base about another designer out here.”

“Finally! Things are looking up.”

Sitting back at my desk, I feel a bit better about everything. I shoot my friends a quick text.

There’s a flurry of excited texts from Malia and Abby. I put the phone down and get to work. I finally decide on tables and chairs for the café and send the choice over to the owner. She loves it.

Maybe things really are looking up. I still don’t know what to do about Spencer and our fake but maybe real relationship, but I don’t have to have everything figured out all the time. Abby is right. What if it works out?

It’s a big chance. None of my other relationships have, so why would this one?

I’m going to give this a shot, who knows what will happen.

I kind of like the unknown.

Chapter Twenty-Two – Spencer

I have a rewritten script in my hand, trying to memorize some new lines the movie writer decided to throw on us today. With only a few weeks left of filming, it’s crazy to try and rewrite the movie, but this guy is trying.
