“This is Andrew.”

“Hey, Mr. Schoenfeld, it’s Spencer James. We met about an hour ago?”

He laughs. “I remember you. I wasn’t expecting your call so soon.”

“I hope it’s okay.”

“It’s great. What can I do for you?”

“Well, coincidentally, my agent just told me that he decided to go in a different direction with his career, so I’m in the market for someone new. Would you be interested in talking with me?”

“Absolutely!” he says. “Let’s set up a meeting. How does next Thursday at two work for you?”

I check my calendar and have an audition early that morning, but nothing else. “Sounds good to me.”

“Perfect. I’m putting you on my calendar. I know this is just an initial meeting, but I’ll bring a copy of my contract, just in case. I hope we can work together. After you went into the audition, I looked you up. You’re set for some great things.”

“I appreciate that. I’m looking forward to talking with you.”

“Me, too. See you next Thursday. Shoot me a text if anything comes up.”

“Will do.”

We hang up, and I add the meeting to my calendar as well.

Over the last few months, even while Leila was here, I started to wonder what direction my life was going. I hated the movies I was doing. I didn’t like my agent. I couldn’t keep my temper under control when I was out on the club scene. It seemed like I’d reached the peak of my career, and it was all downhill from there.

Things are looking up again. I’m going to sign a new agent. I’ll even shop around a bit, though I know I’ll end up with Andrew. Our meeting was brief, but I can already tell he’ll have my best interests in mind. I’ve been good with my temper and am transitioning back into TV.

There’s only one thing left for me to do. I pull up a flight app and find a flight to Boston tomorrow morning. I’ll get in around five their time after the time change, which means I’ll have to make sure Leila is home for dinner.

I text Malia, and she assures me she’s on it. She and Abby will ensure Leila is home so I can talk to her.

I don’t know if it’s going to work. Leila could slam the door in my face. She could also talk to me but decide she doesn’t want friendship, let alone to get back together.

No matter what, I have to do this. Missing Leila has become a huge part of my personality over the last few months. If I’m going to fix everything else in my life, then I have to fix this, too.

I may crash and burn, but at least I’ll know I tried.

Chapter Thirty-Nine - Leila

Shiloh lies on the floor in front of the couch where Abby and I are sitting. My feet are up, and I’m lounged back as some random movie plays on TV. Mostly, Abby and I are just fiddling around on our phones.

“Hey, shouldn’t we be getting ready?”

Abby looks at me. “What do you mean?”

“We’re supposed to go to the bar tonight. How do you not remember?”

Abby glances at the time. It’s a little after five. “I don’t really want to go out anymore,” she says.

I sit up. “Come on, Abby, we haven’t gone out in forever.”

“I know, but I’m not feeling it. We should just stay home.”

“If you’re really not up for it, I’ll go by myself.”

“No!” she says too quickly. “I mean, why would you do that? It’s all younger people now, anyway.”

“We’re still young!”

“Not that young. Especially if you’re going to Kyle’s. Last time I was there, it was like no one was over twenty-one.”

“Come on, Abby. We could go somewhere else. I’ve been looking forward to this all week.”

“Maybe we’ll go out tomorrow night. Can’t we just stay in and watch a movie?”

“I don’t want to do that. I want to go out, dance, drink, and have a good time. When did you turn lame? If I remember correctly, before I moved back, you were still going to bars all the time!”

“You don’t even like the bar! It’s too loud, and there are too many people.”

I laugh. “Yeah, but I kind of got used to it in California. Around here, it’s much tamer than it was there.”

“Back in the day, you would’ve begged me to let you stay home and watch a movie. Why can’t we go back to those times?”

“Because I want to party! I want to mingle. I’m a young, hot, single woman, and so are you. We should be having some fun during this time of our lives!”

Abby rolls her eyes. “You’re just stressed about work and the fact that you only have a couple of weeks to prove to Rebecca that she shouldn’t fire you. We don’t need to go out and party. We need to stay in.”
