My heart felt like it was physically breaking. “I know. Wyatt, I don’t know why I reacted the way I did, and I feel like a silly child for behaving like I have. I promised myself I wasn’t going to do this, and I did it anyway. Now, I might have cost you your scholarship at Baylor.”

“You didn’t. I explained what happened to Coach. He gave me this week off but said I had to be back by next week. He warned me, this was my only pass.”

“Seriously? Oh Lord, I’m so sorry. The team is going to hate me.”

Wyatt laughed. “No, they won’t, baby. No one knows why I left. Just Coach.”

The knock on the hotel room door caused me to jump.

“One second, Wyatt. Someone is at the door.”

When I opened the door and saw Wyatt standing there, I broke down in tears. I threw my body into his, and he wrapped his arms around me and held on for dear life.

Sobbing into his neck, the only thing I could manage to say was, “Wyatt.”

Lifting me, Wyatt walked us into the room, never once letting go of me.

I tightened my hold around his neck. I’d never felt so foolish in my entire life. I’d let my imagination run wild and caused everyone such pain. “I’m so sorry. Please forgive me for being so stupid. I’m so sorry.”

“Shh. I’ve got you, angel. I’ve got you.”

“How in the world did you get here so fast?” Michelle asked with a stunned look on her face.

The sound of her voice had us unlocking our hold on one another.

“Skip is staying at this hotel. I’ve been bunking with him. We’ve been trying to think of all the places the two of you might be.” Wyatt rubbed the back of his neck and let out a halfhearted chuckle. “I never imagined you’d be at the same hotel.”

Wyatt glanced back at me. Lifting his hand, he wiped my tears away. “Please don’t cry, angel. Everything is okay.”

“I acted like a fool.”

“We both did,” Michelle stated. “I totally enabled her with a knee-jerk reaction of my own.”

Wyatt gently kissed me on the lips before turning to Michelle. “Mitch is here.”

Michelle swallowed. “Why didn’t he come up with you?”

Wyatt looked down and then back up at her. “I guess he’s pissed you went off and left your cell. He’s been worried.”

With a tight-lipped smile, Michelle replied, “Oh, I’m sure he’s really been worried. He didn’t seem to care what was happening to me when he was off with Skip, having a grand time.”

Wyatt didn’t respond.

“Is your car here?” he asked Michelle.

“Yes,” she whispered as she reached for her bag and started to pack her things.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

Peeking over her shoulder, she winked. “I’m leaving the two of you alone to work things out. I’m going to head back to my dorm.”

“What about Mitch?” I asked.

Her fake smile faded. “I think, if he truly cared about me, Sky, he’d have come with Wyatt.”

Wyatt cleared his throat. “Michelle, I think the two of you need to talk.”

Walking into the bathroom, Michelle called out, “Well, the last time I checked, he hadn’t tried to contact me. If he wants to talk, he knows where I am.”

Wyatt squeezed my hand and then dropped it. As he cupped my face, his eyes swept over me. “Let’s fix us before we try to fix them.”

With a nod, I looked directly into his eyes. “I’m so sorry I ran.”

He leaned down, and his lips brushed across mine before he rested his forehead to mine. “I was so worried, Skylar. Don’t ever do that to me again.”

“Never,” I whispered as I gripped his T-shirt.

Wyatt

SKYLAR TOOK MICHELLE’S hand in hers. “Michelle, you don’t have to leave.”

With a quick nod, Michelle replied, “I know, but y’all have a lot to talk about, and I really need to get back to reality. This little adventure is going to end up getting me in deep water with my folks. The sooner I face it all, the better.”

“Do you want me to let Mitch know you’re leaving?” I asked.

Michelle’s eyes swung to mine. “No. Thank you though.”

Skylar hugged Michelle. “Everything is going to work out all around.”

Michelle looked at me, and I could see it in her eyes. She knew her reunion with Mitch was going to be nothing like my and Skylar’s.

With a weak smile, she nodded and made her way to the door.

“Call me once you get home if you find your phone,” Skylar said as we walked Michelle to the door.

“Will do. Love you, guys, and I’m really glad everything was a misunderstanding.” When Michelle looked up at me, she winked. “Sorry I let my own insecurities feed Sky’s.”

I shrugged and returned the wink. “As long as I know you’re both safe and everything is going to work out, no harm, no foul.”
