“Gray,” Cole called, pulling me back to the present as he hopped into my daydream.

“Nah. I haven’t seen her,” I found myself lying, unable to suppress a delighted smile. He had no idea how happy I was that Aera had smiled at me for the first time in years.

“Oh.” Cole gave me a suspicious look. “Then, where have you been?”

“Nowhere. I just had to run an errand across town for your mom.”

Errand your face, Gray.

Cole decided to leave it at that.

Whether he fell for it or not remained an unsolved mystery.

“Hey, you forgot something.”

“What?” he asked.

As I approached, I had no intention of becoming physical with him, but my fist suddenly landed on his left cheek.

It was an accident.

Truly.

The kind of accident that doesn’t just happen … accidentally.

Seemingly taken aback, Cole stared at the floor then at me. I waited and waited.

Zero and zilch.

Cole refused to fight back or question my sudden uproar. Instead, he walked away and closed the door behind him.

I just stood there, breathing deeply to calm down, allowing the lingering aroma of Aera—from her hand stroking my wolf head—to soothe my tired soul.

Right before running back to her house, she bent over to baby-talk me, stroked my head and my ears and bopped my nose. How she cared for me while I was in my animal form was easily the highlight of my day. Her touch and her voice were oh so sweet, like a mother caring for her baby boy … or, wait—was that creepy?

Creepy might be more accurate.

I shook my damp hair and slapped my burning cheeks as I attempted to clear my mind off of my teenage fantasies.

I needed a shower.

An ice-cold one.

Before I could get that much needed shower, the presence of another werewolf made itself known, an acrid stench signaling bad news.

Rainer was leaning against the sliding door, chuckling in the dark before inviting himself in, only to slam the tragic story of my life in my face. “You’re lame, Gray. Do you know why guys like you don’t get the girl? Because all you fucking do is stare longingly at her from a distance. That brunette will never notice you.” He shoved his hands in his pocket and looked around my room.

Heaving a deep sigh, I rolled my eyes theatrically. “You son of a bitch. You followed me?” He had a point, though.

“At least I always had your back.”

“Following me is a different story.Ihad your back, Rain.” I pointed at his chest. “You went behind mine. Literally and metaphorically. You did something behind my back, and we’re not supposed to do that. We’re supposed to be a pack. Yet here you are, undermining my authority.” I raised my hands in the air, indicating my exasperation.

“Did you just say pack?” He rubbed his muddy shoes on my aunt’s floor before meeting my gaze and raising a serious question. “Are we?”

I froze for a second but got distracted by the noise he was making with his shoes. “Hey, who said you can come in with your wet shoes? Hey, hey, hey!” He was taunting me on purpose now. “You fucking werewolf, why are you adding on to my chores?”

He smirked. “Can’t help it if you keep on ignoring my wish list.”
