Breathe in, breathe out, I guided myself and apologized to Gray in my mind.

“I can do—”

Bang! Bang! Bang!

“Holy—” I made myself small as three gunshots echoed in the stairwell. They sounded like mini sonic booms, short yet high-pitched, erupting out of nowhere. I trembled between my arms with my hands covering my ears, expecting to hear more.

To my surprise, what came after wasn’t another boom but a girl’s terrified shriek—the girl Gray had followed.

“Gray,” I muttered under my breath, bolting to the rooftop as memories of my vision flooded back unbidden.

When I got there, I caught a glimpse of the girl, frozen with fear on her face as she struggled to speak through the shock, “S-someone, help!”

Then, I saw him.

I wanted to scream, but I staggered to my feet. The bloody sight before me made my head spin, round and round.

Gray.

On the ground, not moving.

His eyes were wide open, though they were blank and glassy. Fresh blood soaked his white undershirt, splattering beneath him.

Gray was dead.

My eyes flew open.Jolting up, I looked around me and found myself back in my room, still wearing my red pajamas. Except, they were now soaked through.

“What the hell?” My voice trembled as I tried to put the pieces together.

I’d been here. I’d already woken up and saw Gray. Someone shot him. He died.

Wait a minute.

I managed to process what happened and came up with a horrifying answer: that despite waking up from what seemed like a nightmare, I had this strong feeling in my gut that I just had another vision.

It wasn’t over yet.

Gray was still going to die.

As I was dressingfor school, I noticed something strange. My day started as usual, but it all felt like déjà vu. My stomach churned as I waited for the next do-over to happen.

I entered the kitchen and saw Mom pacing the floor. “Eomma,” I swallowed. “Did I do something weird last night?”

“Gray carried you home while you were asleep,” was Mom’s antagonistic response.

“I didn’t … wake up?”

Mom stopped what she was doing. She pulled out a dozen eggs from the fridge and slammed its door right in front of my face before adding, “Of course, you didn’t. You were having too much fun flirting with a troublemaker. How many times do I have to remind you that Gray is a bad influence to you? The school even had to call me about you skipping classes. Are you out of your goddamn mind, Aera?”

Again?

“Eomma …” My pulse pounded as I found myself questioning her one more time, repeating what I had said in my vision, “Shouldn’t you scold Gray and not me?”

He Paid Attention
