“Youshouldn’t have done that,” my savior said, his voice deep and inviting. I could listen to it for the rest of my life. Even without having to look at the owner’s face, I recognized him. My last song syndrome: Gray.

Oh shit.

Come back to your senses!I shook my head vigorously.

As it turned out, I didn’t mind being rescued like a damsel in distress as long as he was my knight in shining armor. He was tall, funny, heroic, and fearsome when defending me. I could certainly make an exception for him. Normally, though, the knights did not go wild. They still talked like normal human beings.

Neither happened.

Graygrowledat Rainer, and Rainer did the same. An unusual exchange. It didn’t even sound like an aggravated human anymore; it was one that mimicked thunder and a feral animal combined. Like wolves.

They were both squaring off, slowly circling around each other. Both too far gone to care even if I’d asked them to stop. Especially Rainer, who seemed like he’d been waiting for this moment, and God forbid I denied him.

Gray also looked more concerned with his own idea of chivalry than the actual consequences of the fight he was getting into.

“Are those guys fighting over you?”

I spun around to where the voice came from. It was just some curious guy with white locks and an oversized shirt. His tattoos looked more or less like a third grader’s scribbles on paper. I had no words at this point because people were actually starting to gather and watch the brewing fight.

Gray and Rainer inched closer to each other with every step, their fists literally vibrating with pent-up energy. They were talking to each other, but from where I was standing, I couldn’t hear anything but—

“You are no alpha, Gray.”

A premonition.

I suddenly saw flashes of red, with Gray flailing on the ground as he bled from the huge gaping wound in his neck. Somewhere in the two-second view of what was to come, I noticed a pair of claws, dripping with blood.

The vision disappeared as quickly as it came, making me double over as if someone had sucker punched me in the gut.

But why?

“Are you okay, miss?” It was the tattooed guy again. I gave him my best killer stare as he slowly backed away, leaving me to figure out the best way to defuse the situation that had escalated to the point of no return.

I inched toward them, legs shaking.

Rainer smirked. “What’s gotten into you, Gray? You’re boiling with rage as if she’s yours.” He tilted his head in my direction. “That’s very bold of him, isn’t it?”

I gulped.

Maybe I should stay put.

Gray growled, clenching his fists harder. “With every word you say, I imagine the satisfaction it will give me to smash your face on the sidewalk.”

“Oh? Be careful what you wish for, then.” Another gesture from Rainer, this time toward the passersby who’d formed a circle around them. “You wouldn’t want them to see your canine teeth get knocked out, would you? You would go viral.”

Gray didn’t break stride. “Why don’t you try and come at me? Let’s see who gets the last laugh. From what I’ve heard, you don’t even brush your teeth because you’re too occupied with sticking your nose where they’re not supposed to be.”

Rainer snapped. He dashed forward with a left hook, aiming for Gray’s jaw.

Gray jumped back, avoiding the blow by a millisecond. He retaliated with a kick, sending Rainer flying a couple of feet backward, crashing into the back of a van.

The onlookers gasped.

Rainer slowly stood up, cracking his neck as he did. He started ambling toward Gray then abruptly broke into a run.

Gray barely had time to register what was happening when Rainer’s fist connected with his stomach. The force of the punch lifted him off the ground before he came crashing down with a grunt. Another brutal kick from Rainer kept him down a while longer.

“I told you it was bold of you to assume places,” Rainer taunted, turning his back on Gray.
