Young lycanthropes like me don’t have full control over our healing abilities. It’s up to our bodies when to use it and when not to use it. If we were hurt but still had energy, we would automatically heal. If we were already less than a step away from death, forget about it. If we simply wanted to fool everyone and keep ourselves from healing abnormally fast, then good luck; it would take immense labor and pain.

I tried the latter.

Keeping my bruises intact and delaying my wounds from healing was already the most challenging and nastiest part of my day. And Aera’s face up close … not helping.

I held my breath as sweat rolled down my forehead, chest, shoulders, hands, and feet—helplessly releasing my pheromones to the entire school. Aera had usually managed to anchor me and kept me on my toes, but this time I had to do it myself.

“Too bad.” I put on a brave front as I struggled tonotheal. “I like you so much that I couldn’t help it … and I kind of promised myself I’d protect you no matter what.” Okay, maybe that slipped out of my mouth by mistake. Let’s just say… I was in excruciating pain, and when one is in pain, they don’t usually realize what they’re rambling about. “Why aren’t you surprised? I just confessed to you.”

“It’s nothing new. You kissed me before. That wasn’t for fun, was it?”

Ah, right. Her straightforward responses never failed to impress me.

I smiled softly, shaking my head no.

“Then stop making me worry,” she whispered, her gaze focused on anywhere but my eyes as she dabbed more ointment against my skin.

I grinned.

Really, all I needed wasskin-ship. Her godly touch.

Lame, Gray, lame.

I laughed to myself. She glared. I shut my mouth. With the power she had over me, she could’ve been my alpha.

“So uh, you were worried?” I blinked. Because I always felt like blinking more made me look innocent, and I needed that kind of image to keep Aera from zonking me.

She grunted, took a piece of bandage from the first aid kit, peeled off the backing of the adhesive strip, and finally glued it right above my cheek in the harshest way possible. “You’re annoying, you know?”

“I am?” I stared at her long lashes, bewitched.

She noticed. “Stop looking at me like you wanna kiss me again.”

“But I do,” I admitted.

Her lips parted but no words came out.

I had to ask, “Do you?”

She immediately pressed her finger against my cut.

Violently.

Wow, double attack.

I whined.

Was that a no?

She then looked me straight in the eyes, but not for whatever reason I had in mind.

“I heard it’s your birthday tomorrow,” she said. “Is there anything you want?”

“Date me,” I whispered. “I mean, go on a date with me.”

“Hey.” She didn’t seem pleased. “Do you think I’m joking?”

“I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely not joking. You may be hard to get, but I’m hard to get rid of, small bean,” I said. “Come on. It’s just one date. Tonight, at seven. I’ll wait for you in front of the amusement park. If it’s a yes, you’ll be there. If not … I’ll be there either way.”
