On the other hand, she hadn’t changed at all. Same old Kryssy.

“Are you a fortune teller or something?” I shoved my hands in my pockets and headed toward the road.

The moment I turned my back on her, I caught the sound of her pulse kicking up … and footsteps rushing in from the darkness.

We were not alone.

I spun around to grab her, the action giving me just enough time to seize her arm before she could jab a syringe into my flesh. “Kryssy, what are you—”

“Sorry, Gray.” She tugged against my grip, her voice entirely insincere. “But I really hate seeing you laughing like a fool whenever Aera’s next to you.” The syringe fell from her hand, but the smug look on her face lingered.

Before I could react, something sharp pierced into the back of my neck. It burned as the syringe emptied into my circulatory system, and I exploded in pain.

I fell back instantly, head spinning as the brain fog and water in my eyes blurred my sight. The excruciating and unceasing pain radiated down the rest of my body, leaving me speechless. In just a second, I was on my knees, choking on toxin.

Struggling for air, I recognized Rainer’s voice, his scent, and that broad shadow of his emerging in my line of sight. “Hey, Gray,” he greeted, practically laughing under his breath. “Remember when I said you’ll regret what you did to me? Well, I wasn’t joking.”

With my heart leaping into my throat, I closed my eyes and tried to catch my breath. “You coward.” I grimaced, fighting the compulsion to faint. “You think the only way you can beat me is with poison?” Maybe, he could have. Whatever he gave me was impeding my healing abilities. Apparently, once you get used to not feeling any pain, and all of a sudden you feel pain all at once—sharp, burning, throbbing, aching, shooting—it’ll be like feeling pain for the first time. Absolutely not fun.

“Oh, well, it works. You’re on your knees now, aren’t you?” Rainer asked, laughing louder, like a crazy man stuck in an asylum. He certainly found my agony entertaining. “You see, I noticed that you’re always a step ahead of me. It’s like you know when you’ll die, which is why … I came up with another method to hurt you. From here on, whatever happens, it’s allyourfault.”

I tried to shift, to pump the poison out of my system by sheer willpower, but I could barely curl my pinky. I could not even open my mouth to speak coherently.

“I’m not here just to poison you, Gray. I’m here to teach you a lesson.” Rainer lifted my chin, forcing me to look up to him. “I’m tired of you protecting everyone I want gone. So tired of you pretending to be a saint. And Krystal here agrees with me. Now here we are. You, a weak alpha kneeling in front of me, the better alpha. Isn’t it astonishing?” As soon as he said it, the color of his eyes turned intensely red, as if flaunting the powers he’d most probably stolen from another alpha. “Do you know why your parents had to die, Gray? Because you exist. You’re weak. You’re a selfish little brat. You think everything is all about you. You think you’re the alpha, but you’re just a worthless piece of shit. You bring death upon everyone around you. That’s why your parents died, and that’s why … it’s happening all over and over again.”

I could feel my anger spiraling out of control, but my body refused to even twitch. Pain rushed through my nerves like a wave, but my helplessness felt greater than anything. And at that moment, all I could ask was, “Why?”

“It’s simple.” Rainer pushed me on the ground, his maniacal laughter slowly diminishing and fading into something darker. “I want to incapacitate you, old friend. So that by the time you get up, ifyoueven get up, it’ll be too late for you to save your pack.”

I coughed, my voice slurred so much that I couldn't even understand myself.

“I think it would be fun,” Rainer continued. “Seeing you break while your pack is burning on the ground, knowing you’ll blame yourself over it for the rest of your life. Just like how you mademefeel.” He gave me a sinister smile, his lips curling around his deadly canines as his potent and wicked cologne emanated in the air. “Didn’t I tell you, Gray? You shouldn’t have ignored me. I’m a little dysfunctional after all.”

Supernatural Connection

“Dad?”

I scoffed at what sounded like a stupid prank and was about to scold the old man, but the rattling and caws coming from the door snatched my attention.

Dropping the phone, I headed toward the noise, my heart drawn to the cacophony despite my brain urging caution.

Ravens were picking away at the door, cawing persistently for reasons unknown.

Something inside me was tempted to open the damn door, and I almost did.

Until, my vision started to fade and darkness consumed me.

When I regained consciousness,I was still sprawled on the ground. But I did a quick system’s check: head and teeth intact, elbows tingling, hips throbbing like an old woman, no signs and symptoms of memory loss. In short, I managed to live even after fainting for the first time in seventeen years.

I recalled the man who had claimed to be my father, the random large birds practically knocking my door down, and blacking out. I should have been freaking out to the core, but I remembered Gray.

Gray, a werewolf.

Gray, making me look like a fool.

But also …
