I gave him a judgmental look. “He rejected you, and you clearly said he knows what we are already. Plus, he ambushed you. In other words, he finally tried to kill you. I don’t care if it was an accident or not.”

“He treated me too!” he exclaimed and lifted his shirt to show me his bandaged abdomen. It wasn’t even nicely done. And the bandage was pink!

“Great!” I tossed my shoe against the wall. “He stabbed you and patched you up, but then it’s useless because obviously you can heal.”

“It’s the thought that counts,” he defended.

“I am profoundly confused.” I stood up, pacing back and forth as I attempted to connect the dots and comprehend the Keith puzzle. “Is he a sadist?” I pondered out loud. “So, he just stabbed you because he thought you were a thief pretending to be Edward Cullen, and then treated you?”

“Don’t be a hypocrite. You did the same to Rainer,” he casually reminded me.

I mopped my brow, momentarily speechless as I recalled the day I asked Stan to save Rainer’s ass. I had ventured out into the woods a few days ago to find him with Krystal, but instead of receiving a ‘thank you for not killing me before’ note, he went rogue. My effort to keep him alive was in vain. It was like the brother I used to know completely disappeared from the face of the earth and came back as a demon.

“There’s one more thing,” Cole added. “Keith said it was an older woman who killed Willa. A hunter.”

“An older woman?” I questioned, taken aback. “Why didn’t he say so earlier? Does he know who this old lady is?” With this little info, we could’ve averted so many, many obstacles. Well, too late.

He scratched his head again. “I don’t know?”

“Then let’s torture him until he talks,” I suggested with a straight face.

Cole inched forward as he balled his hands into fists, preparing to torture me instead.

I laughed and started to run with one missing shoe. Cole shouted a threat before chasing me down the stairs. He knew I was kidding, but Cole was never the type to enjoy teasing. He would rather be ignored.

But not this time. We both knew we could use a race in the school hallway.

Just like the old times.

Love Rain

I knewit was going to rain at five that evening. I’d checked the weather online, told my mom not to pick me up because I had to attend an extra P. E. class (a white lie, by the way), and brought Gray’s yellow umbrella with me. I had been waiting for too long. My ass was growing impatient. I wanted to show him the umbrella so I could confront him myself, but Gray being Gray … it wasn’t going to be an easy task. Sure, he’d been back to school for days, but he was barely present at the moment. He spent most of his day on the rooftop or in the hallway playing tag with Cole, and of course, at the sacred detention room, doing nothing but staring off into space.

Thirty minutes after class dismissal, Gray stepped out of the school entrance in his hoodless bomber jacket and wrinkled undershirt.

As expected, he didn’t carry a bag or a raincoat with him.

I sighed, like a wife who just witnessed her husband’s negligence. But then as a wife, that would make him my responsibility. I shook my head, amused but also astounded at my wild imagination.

“Are you feeling better?” I asked as he lifted his gaze to meet mine. “Of course, you’re not. What am I even asking? I think the right question should be—don’t you have anything to say to me?” Not exactly how I pictured my confrontation to go, but yeah, I ended up sounding like a resentful little brat.

“Like … what?” He played dumb—or maybe hewasdumb.

“Here!” I yelled as I casually placed the umbrella in his hands. “Thanks for letting me borrow it.”

He looked down at his hands, his eyes widening. “What?”

My forehead wrinkled with pure annoyance and betrayal. “You were that white wolf,” I blurted. “Yoo Yeonwoo … You’re a werewolf.”

I totally imagined this scene differently. It could’ve been more dramatic, no?

His jaw fell open, and I waited patiently for him to break the ice. For an answer to drop out of the sky so he would know what to say. For honesty. But instead, he coughed and laughed at me during such a consequential moment.

“Can you take this seriously?” I snapped.

Well, that shut him up.

“Are you afraid of me? Or are you worried I’ll start fearing you? When will you ever be ready, Gray? Are you planning to keep me in the dark forever?” I tried to get an answer out of him, but the more he looked at me with confusion and denial, the more my heart hurt. “Fine.” Rolling my eyes, I turned my back on him and stepped into the rain. Never mind that I was wearing my favorite blue coat and Adidas shoes, because after everything we’d been through, Gray still couldn’t trust me.
