She looked away again, this time flicking her hair.

Harry must be loving this drama unfolding in his office, not.But I was glad someone was witnessing Ainslee’s refusal to admit we were not together. What the hell was going on with her?

“Do either of you have any more questions?” Harry asked quietly.

We both shook our heads.

Harry gave Ainslee some brochures, including a helpline phone number. “I can’t emphasise enough, Ainslee, to use the helpline if you feel down, very sad or need to reach out to someone. You’re welcome to see me again or talk to your own GP if you have any concerns about your period, the pain, or if anything differs from what you usually experience, and we can take it from there. Otherwise, I recommend taking ibuprofen and increasing your food intake and rest.”

Ainslee left the consultation room and I had the honour of dropping my pants yet again and holding up my dick for Harry to inspect my balls.

“Everything is looking great. I can’t see any bruising. No bleeding or difficulty when you urinate?” I shook my head. “No pain?”

“No more pain, but I need to get on horseback for two days for the muster. Am I going to be right for that?”

“The fact there’s no bruising is a great sign there was no internal damage, and that you’re urinating comfortably. If in doubt on the muster, if you feel uncomfortable, I would dismount and walk. Not ideal but this could be a question of needing surgery if there’s a rip or a tear internally. You’d require emergency treatment, regardless of the sheep situation.”

I sighed and Harry continued. “I’m serious. So many farmers in this district think that their health is getting in the way of their profits. Chasing sheep when you are in pain could lead to drastic consequences. If you really want to be a father in the future, keep tabs on your testicles on this muster and act accordingly.”

“I get it. Thanks. Can I pull my pants up again?”

Harry nodded and pulled the curtain back for privacy. He’s just felt up my balls and yet closes a curtain when I am covering them up.

I thanked Harry and left quickly to find none other than Stacey at the reception desk. After paying for the appointments, I then suggested we get food and coffee at a local café.

Ainslee gasped, delighted.

“It’s not a date, Ainslee. We need to talk. From what I have learnt on the internet since your announcement, you need at least a week after your period is due to test effectively for pregnancy. You turned up here when your period was a day late. Please, just tell me what’s going on?”

At first, I thought Ainslee was going to deny her act, but her shoulders slumped.

“I thought … if I was pregnant, you might want to be with me after all.”

I was a mix of fury and pity. I couldn’t even form words. Pete’s warning about the rumours had been right.

“There was talk at uni you were up to something.”

“You’re mad, I know. You must be furious.” She licked her lips. “I was desperate.”

“Desperate?” I hedged.

Ainslee’s face fell and, in that moment, the faint purple circles under her eyes became obvious, like she hadn’t been sleeping well.

“Things have happened. At home with my family.” Ainslee licked her lips again. “I just thought … if I was the mother of your future child that you … and I … would get married.”

“If you had any ideas that financial security would come with falling pregnant with a young farmer, you are very much mistaken.” I pushed my fingers through my hair. “Can’t believe I had to say that out loud.”

“I know, I wasn’t really thinking straight about all of this.” Ainslee winced. “When my period was late, I convinced myself it could be true.”

“And it’s very unlikely to be, as we’ve both heard from a GP.”

“Yeah, I know,” she said in a small voice. “I’d hoped when you said you loved me that this could’ve been my happily ever after.”

I sighed. “I’m sorry, Ainslee. I shouldn’t have said that. No matter what. I led you on.”

She managed a small smile. “I’ve led myself on this whole time.” She swiped her eyes. “Dammit.”

“Let’s get something to eat.”
