Doug surfaced for air, and Julie-June giggled in his ear. “Going back to Jane’s place.”

Ah, so it’s Jane, then.Jane giggled an address and then continued to maul his mouth. She lived on the other side of Ballydoon, not much out of my way.

Rosie turned on the radio to cover the make-out session noises, and the Spice Girls sang about spicing up your life. Rosie encouraged me to join in, and our duet at least covered up the noises coming from the back seat.

Thirty minutes later, they tumbled out of the car with Jane running up to the front door, heels in hand. Doug appeared at my car window, making the motion to wind the window down with his crotch in my face and his dick bursting to get out of his dress pants. Reluctantly I did, and he leant down on the door.

“Dude, I didn’t bring any condoms tonight. Help a mate out here. Give me some.”

I sighed. “I don’t have any, Doug.”

“You always have a rubber just in case.”

“Really, I don’t.”

“Bullshit.” He flicked his eyes between Rosie and me. “You’re holding out on me.”

“Dude, it’s true.”

Doug’s eyes narrowed, and then he raised an eyebrow. “Oh wait, I see—”

“Oh god, here, Doug,” Rosie blurted, rummaging around in her purse, then reaching across me, holding up two condoms. I couldn’t help but stare. Rosie’s face was one of vaguely irritated, innocent virtue. She smiled at Doug like she had helped him cross the road.

Doug grabbed the condoms and stuffed them into his pocket. “Rosie, you are a champion. Little Doug thanks you big time.”

I frowned at Doug. “You call your dick ‘Little Doug’?”

He shrugged. “Gotta go, losers.” He tapped the roof of my car and bounded towards the house.

I watched him, mouth open and mind reeling.

Rosie had condoms.

Rosie had TWO condoms.

“Um, did you want to go now?” Rosie asked.

I gave her a side glance. She was staring straight out the front window, not at me.

“Yeah,” I coughed. “Yes, let’s go.”

Rosie had packed two condoms for tonight’s footy awards dinner that I invited her as my date.

Christ on a kebab with extra cheese and hummus; what the hell did that mean?

Dad is stable in hospital and will stay in Stanmore General for a few more days. He’s cranky about being stuck in bed. Thank you for your well wishes and calls asking about his health. Dad will be back very soon.

Cheryl: thinking of you, your sisters and Mama Z.

Merle: I hope your dad gets out soon, dear.
