I still didn’t have my clothes from the laundry and had to settle for a pair of sweatpants due for a wash.

“Correct, doc. Guess I’m going to be the laughing-stock of Ballydoon by lunchtime.”

“Patient-doctor confidentiality.” Harry’s pen scratched across the paper making notes.

“Even sister-girlfriend confidentiality?”

Harry glanced up. “Even that.” Though his face looked disappointed he couldn’t share this with Stacey.

“Rosie is not under the Hippocratic oath,” I whined. “I’m sure she’d love this opportunity to humiliate me to all of the town.”

Harry looked up from his notes. “She’s been waiting in the homestead and is quite worried.”

I frowned, saying nothing. Admittedly, she hadn’t laughed or said I deserved it. Maybe it was still to come. She’d been very helpful, called for Dr Harry and got the frozen peas.

Huh.

“I don’t think you have any damage to your, ah, penis or testicles.”

“Small mercies.” I adjusted the bag of peas, more relieved than I was letting on.

“The pain should ease within the hour. If you are still experiencing pain and swelling by the end of the day, call the surgery and I can come back to check.”

“Stop flirting, doc. You’re dating my sister, not me.”

Harry huffed a laugh. “You can take paracetamol or ibuprofen. Most importantly, you’re spending today in bed. And no sexual activity until the swelling and pain has gone.”

I briefly shut my eyes and nodded, then opened them with a cursory glance at my textbooks and assignment notes. “Guess I can catch up on study.”

Harry packed up his things. “Confidentiality is assured with me. I can’t guarantee with your mum or Rosie.” He quickly glanced out the window. “Speaking of, she’s walking over this way with two cups of tea and biscuits.”

I sat up, wincing. “Is Sonny still out there? You’d better warn Rosie, just in case.”

“Sonny?”

“The wombat. Son of Hades.”

Harry did a cursory glance out the window. “No wombat in sight but looks like you’ve got a mortal enemy living under your bed, mate.”

I sighed, flopping back against the pillows when there was a knock at the door.

Harry raised an eyebrow.

I sat up against the headboard and nodded. “Yeah, show her in. I’ll see if I can convince her not to tell everyone.”

Harry smothered a grin. “If I don’t hear from you tonight, I’ll check in tomorrow. Luckily I had a house call in Ballydoon this morning. I copped an elbow once to the same region playing footy during med school. That was the bumpiest ride to the emergency department to have my balls felt up by three different doctors, all old enough to be my grandfather.”

“And my sister’s boyfriend is better than that?”

Harry laughed. “At least you don’t have to do an internship with me for six weeks after I’ve examined your balls.”

He opened the door. Rosie glanced between us and headed to my bed, setting a cup of tea and the biscuits on my bedside table as I waved goodbye to Harry.

“You didn’t have to do that,” I grumbled and quickly added, “But thanks.”

A thin sheet was all that covered me. The doona was folded at the end of the bed. Winter winds were roaring outside today. The fireplace was low.

“I’ll get the fire.”
