I didn’t need to hear more. My flight had been called. I gathered my clothes and started dressing.

MAKING FRIENDS

Simon

At the entrance to the boarding area, Sadie kissed me, long and deep.

“Forget your doubts,” I said. “We’re going to be perfect together.”

She said simply, “I know.”

“And if you forget, I’ll be around to remind you.”

She giggled, suddenly looking like a teenager. “Okay, as long as the main course is followed by dessert.”

We kissed one last time. As she walked toward security screening, I caught a slight trace of rose and jasmine scent riding the air behind her. That scent made my heat rise and I licked my parched lips. I watched as she strode away, looking so strong and independent while hiding her sensitive, fragile heart.

I already missed her, but the memory of her laughing a short time ago cheered me. Sadie had a joyful, full body laugh that never failed to cheer me. In those moments she was more beautiful than ever. And she was already the most beautiful woman on earth to my eyes. I wanted to love and protect her from all the unhappiness life could throw at a person. Protecting her from her sabotaging mother seemed a good place to start.

Lost in thought, I turned to leave and almost knocked over the statuesque redhead who was standing so close behind me, she could have been my shadow.

“Excuse me,” I said, barely looking at her.

“SJ! I thought that was you and Sadie in front of me. It looked like you were having a moment, so I didn’t want to interrupt.” Ronnie turned her green eyes up at me. “Ronnie–Ronnie Flynn,” she added in case I was so clueless I didn’t know who she was. “I didn’t get a chance to thank you for the lovely party Saturday night. You two are going to be so happy together.” Her smile widened.

No wonder so many people shared their secrets with her. Her angelic face hid her devil’s heart perfectly. She spoke with a musical voice that had a practiced softness to it, soothing and wheedling at the same time. Thriving on gossip, she set few boundaries on what she would report on her blog, cityandcountry.

“Thank you, I’m sure we will.” I stepped away from her.

“Is Sadie going to Montreal?” Ronnie tried to look innocent, but her eyes said that even though she was asking questions, she already knew the answers. She placed a finger on my forearm as if to hold me there. Without waiting for my answer, she added, “What a coincidence. We might be on the same flight.”

That was no fucking coincidence. I removed her hand but said nothing.

“Is she in Business Class?” Ronnie persisted.

I checked my watch and said, “Have a good trip.”

“You’re in valet parking right? Silver Porsche? I came in right behind you. I had to wait until you’d mended your lovers’ spat before I could hand my car to the valet.”

I walked away, trying to remember what the woman with x-ray vision might have gleaned from seeing Sadie and me in valet parking.

Sadie

A male flight attendant with a flawless smile showed me to my seat, gave me a menu for the late supper, and offered me a blanket and pillow. I said I’d appreciate the blanket after the meal and sat down carefully. My ass still prickled from two spankings in a single day, but I smiled at the tender reminder of Simon’s love. I dragged out my phone to send him a soppy note and grinned as I typeddear benign dictator, I love negotiating with you.I was filling the screen with a bunch of lipstick kiss emojis when a woman was shown to the seat next to mine.

“Well, if it isn’t Sadie Donohue,” she said without attempting to hide her interest in what I was typing.

“Ronnie F…f…Flynn.” I hoped my stuttered response didn’t show my surprise too much.

“The one and only.” She held out an elegant, manicured hand. “Congratulations on your engagement.”

“Thank you.” I tried not to be too dazzled by her beauty. With porcelain skin, wide green eyes, and thick red hair that curled around her shoulders and down to her elbows, she was breathtaking.

She handed her jacket to the flight attendant and slipped into the seat next to me. “Thank you so much for the great party.”

“It was our pleasure,” I said automatically and hit send on my text message.

“I saw Simon just now. He said you’d had a rough patch, but you’d kissed and made up.”
