“Because you love me.” My lines came easily from practice, and while I believed him completely in the moment, doubts still lingered about our long-term future together. Now was not the time to air my misgivings.

Simon tucked my hair over my shoulders and kissed my cheek. “I love you more than anyone I’ve ever loved in my life. I canceled four major meetings just to come and see you in Montreal. I must be getting old because I’ve never rearranged my business life for a simple problem like this before. You have bewitched me.”

I held Sadie on my lap, comforting her, until my legs went to sleep. Then I helped her to her feet. “Are you feeling better, little one?”

She smiled shyly at the endearment that I used sparingly. Her eyes were calm again and she’d stopped shaking from the spanking. For the moment, our world was safe from doubt.

The heat from her spanked cheeks was still warm on my thighs. I wondered how long it would be before she obeyed me without question before these sterner spankings became unnecessary. Probably never.

She picked up the panties that were damp with her own juices and held them away from herself at arm’s length.

“Put them on,” I said, unrolling my sleeves and fastening my cufflinks.

“They’re wet.” She made a face.

“Another reminder to behave.”

“You enjoy this, don’t you?” She stepped into them.

“Yes and no.”

“Yes, because it turns you on?” She found her dress, slid it over her head, and rubbed of her reddened thighs through the fabric.

“I’ll plead the fifth on that.” I picked up my tie. “No, because sometimes it’s damn inconvenient to have to spank you. Like today, when I had to fly across the country to show you my rules aren’t flexible. I knew your history and never expected you to just cave on my demands, but I may have underestimated your rebellious streak.”

“Seriously, it could have waited.” Sadie took out a makeup bag and stepped into the bathroom. When she spoke next, her voice echoed around the marble walls. “Besides, sometimes I wonder why I have to be the one doing all the rule following. Why am I always giving myself to you and not the other way around?”

I leaned on the doorjamb and watched her wipe away her smeared mascara. The rose and jasmine fragrance she wore wafted over to me and I wanted to bury my face in her hair and between her thighs, but I held myself in check. We’d make love later, when more time had elapsed after the reminder of my authority. I couldn’t follow this spanking with sex this time. Her offense had been too great. She needed to suffer the consequences a while longer.

A worried look ghosted across her face and she made herself busy, digging through her cosmetic bag. It was only few days since the last guest from the engagement party had left and we’d had that long session on the island. Now she was pushing me away again. She was challenging me, and I wasn’t sure why, but I was a patient man. I’d wait and watch and keep coming back stronger than the time before.

I considered my answer before I said, “I believe you give yourself to me because you love me. Maybe that wasn’t the reason at first. Maybe you were only curious the first few times I spanked you, the same as I first wondered whether or not you were a strong enough woman for me.”

I moved behind her and wrapped my arms around her.

“Besides, I do give myself to you, every time I spank you. It takes emotional and physical energy to deliver a proper spanking. That’s why sometimes I insist you thank me afterwards. I don’t always spank you just for the pleasure of it. Sometimes it’s just plain hard work.”

I turned away from her, humming as I straightened my tie.

WINNING FAMILY

The spanking helped a lot, while it was happening. For a few pain-soaked minutes, all my petty worries vanished. The loving comfort that followed it assuaged the terrors of how I would ultimately disappoint Simon.

But as soon as I was on my feet again, I found myself fumbling and wanting space between us again. I was all wrong to be his wife. My family was blue collar all the way. I was the first to finish university, never mind complete high school. Simon’s family had degrees stretching back to the nineteenth century, when his great grandfather or someone of that ilk first graduated from Queen’s.

Plus, we Donohues had to look after ourselves. That was like our family motto. That’s why I was there in Montreal. Did Mom call some friend when they were in an accident? No, she called me because families have to stick together. The smaller the family, the more they needed to stick together. Few families were as small as mine.

Still, when Simon answered my challenge about not giving himself to me, I felt ashamed of not appreciating the frigging obvious. He didn’t hold the question against me, though. Instead, he started humming as if I’d pleased him in some small way. That was the mystery of the man: one moment he was all ferocious and angry about some perfectly reasonable action of mine. The next minute he’d smile at something I thought was going to land me butt-to-sky again.

He left me to finish my makeup repairs while he went to the living room and made phone calls. My hand shook as I twisted my hair into a bun. It was too hot to have it hanging around my neck like a thick wool scarf.

The damp panties were clinging to my derriere when I joined Simon in the other room.
