She shook her head.

I rubbed my chin. “I’ve accepted that Ronnie Flynn is probably in our lives to stay, so maybe it would be better to harness her energy for the greater good of mankind. For the good of Jacobson and Donohue-kind. And for the sake of an exciting new game that will be coming out early next year.”

At the mention of TripleR3, Sadie’s guarded expression brightened. “Really? How would that work?”

“I’m going to offer her a contract to be your personal consultant, ad hoc. She could be your protocol advisor for the few public events we can’t avoid. She could help with anything from what to wear to who to avoid. When TripleR3 is ready, she can help you with promotion and getting it in front of the right people. If she doesn’t know the right people directly, she’ll know who does.”

“Are you trying to buy her off, and at the same time, give me a shadow? Someone I can never be free of?” Sadie shifted away from me and winced.

“Are your buttocks tender when you do that?” I grinned.

“You know they are.” A charming crimson tide crept up her neck.

“As to Ronnie? She’s a bloodhound. She’ll only stay away if the incentive to do so is greater than the reward from chasing us. Brock is working on a contract with an ironclad confidentiality agreement. If she breathes a word of anything she learns while under contract, she’ll be lucky to get out of court with the clothes on her back.”

“Will she go for that?”

“We’ll see. In the meantime, that is the plan.”

MOVING FORWARD

Sadie

Simon’s grand plan of bringing Ronnie into the perimeter of our lives wasn’t as crazy as it sounded. She’d already offered to be my bridge between cultures, but I decided not to mention that to him. He wanted it to be his idea and I was happy for him to claim it. If it worked well, he could claim all the credit. Likewise, if it failed.

“She really does know everybody,” he said and kissed my neck, as if that was the end of the discussion.

“What do you suggest I do with her? How do you want me to handle this?”

“With as little supervision as possible.”

“Oh great, I’ll probably do something wrong and end up over you knee.”

“I hope so.” He smiled, flashing his dimples.

“C’mon, give me some guidelines of how you want to handle this.”

“Treat her like a friend? What do you do with Angie?”

“Angie’s been my best friend forever. I don’t have to think about what to do with her. We talk to each other about no end of nonsense. She phones me just to tell me her latest contact lens emergency.”

“You could do the same thing with Ronnie.”

“Oh please. It takes years before you can share that sort of minutiae without feeling like an idiot.”

“While you’re here in Montreal, why don’t you and Ronnie go to a movie or something? Shopping? Dinner out? Anything to keep her away from your Mom and D2.”

“I think I can do that.”

“And so you don’t have to feel obligated, I’ve already called Layla and got D2’s bills from La Belle Vie switched to my account and a full credit issued to Ronnie. Your grandfather has expensive tastes, by the way.”

“As long as someone else is paying.”

“On another note.” Simon made a steeple with his fingers in front of his face. His voice was somber.

“What?”
