“Which is…?”
“I’ve known all along that Cynthia adopted you. That Jacques wasn’t your father and D2 was. The detail that worried you so much was a non-issue to me.” I took her hand and lifted it to my lips and kissed it.
“You said I was under eighteen and deserved my privacy.”
“I did. But I didn’t say I didn’t know the facts of your birth and childhood. I just meant we didn’t need to discuss parts of your life beyond your control.”
She swallowed hard and looked out the window. After a long moment, she turned to face me. “As I got to know you better, I didn’t think it would bother you much, if at all. But it was a lie by omission and that made it a guilty secret.”
“What about now? Today? Is there anything else you want to tell me? Any other secrets you fear may alienate my feelings for you?”
“None. I swear.”
“That’s too bad. I’d love to have a reason to spank you, but I can wait. I’m sure you’ll give me one soon enough.”
“I’m sure I will,” she said.
The bright eagerness in her eyes told me, once again, that I’d found the perfect partner.
