“Just thinking out loud that was why I could see spots through your black fur. Did you know there’s one on your spine, just above your bottom, that looks like a little heart?”

Liar, I thought, but didn’t voice the accusation. He didn’t sound like he was lying about it, but there was no such shape in my fur pattern.

Not that I’d know, though.

Staying up on the limb, he kept scanning the trees until he finally shrugged. The next second he jumped, landing on one thick branch before vaulting to the ground.

For a wolf, he was pretty damn agile.

“That’s all I could see,” he said, his tone apologetic. “Can you climb like—”

I don’t know if he read my expression or just decided to expedite the trip. Either way, he pulled me to him in a one-armed hug and up we went.

CHAPTER10

DOONE

“Show off,”the woman whispered as we reached the top of the cliff and I eased her onto solid ground.

I tried not to grin as the beautiful she-cat-wolf slipped on the shoes we found on the climb up. I had also noticed her panties and bra, but my gentlemanly ways only went so far. The no panties situation made the scent and heat between her legs more accessible to me, and I reveled in the free bounce and push of her full breasts against my back as she rode me like a monkey. I could always go back for them later.

Correction—I would go back for them.

Before then, I would revel in their absence as long as I could.

“What’s next?” she asked between ruthlessly chomping at her bottom lip.

“Lunch,” I said. “If the ants haven’t gotten to the bag I dropped by the spring. And water, lots of water.”

She laughed, the sight and sound triggering another burst of protective need inside me. Despite that laughter, I felt her apprehension as I turned and motioned her to follow me. This time, I knew where to aim my energy as an alpha. Her head was all cat, but her heart was a different matter.

“Don’t,” she softly admonished even as she fell in next to me.

“Not gonna promise,” I answered, trying and failing to keep the grin off my face.

She offered a snort I couldn’t interpret then asked the next logical question.

“And after lunch?”

“Well, I have to tell the others about you,” I warned. “Not just because I’m the newest shifter to show up here and am still earning my way into their circle, but because, no matter how I already feel about you, you have to be vetted by the others. The pack has faced a lot of hostilities from outside shifters and has several vulnerable members to protect.”

My face felt like I had fire ants crawling over it by the time I finished answering. How would she interpret what I had said about regardless of how I felt? That wasn’t really saying anything beyond the fact that not everyone might be as accepting as I was.

“Here,” I said, relief flashing through me as I found the bag and water jug I had dropped when I gave chase. Taking the sub out of its sealed wrapping, I broke it in two and offered one half to her. “Miraculously ant free.”

She smiled softly as we sat down next to the spring, using our hands to scoop up a few mouthfuls of water before attacking the sandwich and blackberries. For the first five or so minutes, there was no talking. With both of us having shifted in addition to all the chasing, climbing, and healing, we were famished.

“Please don’t tell them about…about how I…”

Her lips rolled inward. Not wanting to draw out her discomfort, I filled in the rest of her question.

“About you having two totems?”

She nodded.

“Today really is the first time you double shifted? Did you suspect you could?”

She shook her head, then clarified what she was saying “no” to.
