“Thinking with your dick,” he mumbled then looked at Mosa, his hand extended and one eyebrow raised.

She didn’t surrender her phone, just pointed at his recliner.

Curse words trailing behind him, he snatched up the device then jabbed at the screen. Maybe because of how seldom the old wolf actually used his phone, the person on the other end answered immediately.

“Yeah, Prez, I need to call church. Immediately.”

Smelling the salt of Mosa’s silent tears, I reached to where her hand had returned to her lap. I wrapped my fingers around hers. When she didn’t pull away as I half-expected, I leaned closer. Mallory would hear whatever I might whisper, so I had to choose my words carefully.

“You won’t be able to hide it if—”

“Hold on!” Mallory snapped at Braeden. “I need to teach a certain prospect a lesson he’s not going to like.”

Mallory dropped the phone back onto the recliner and took his first step toward me. Mosa jumped up from her chair, her entire body trembling with the urge to shift. I could tell by the strain on her face that she was fighting the change.

No doubt she couldn’t be certain what form she would take.

I swiftly rose to my feet to form a barrier between Mosa and the old wolf.

“This is your daughter,” I growled at Mallory, my fangs beginning to show as I fought to control my change to an alpha state or the other transformations my body was capable of.

Especially those other transformations.

“Yeah, so why don’t you get the fuck back in your truck and get your probationary ass back to work!”

My phone began to vibrate in my pocket.

Mallory stormed back to the recliner to find that the pack’s leader had hung up on him.

“Answer it,” he snapped.

Before I could decide if that was the best course, it stopped ringing.

“Well,” Mallory laughed. “I guess Braeden is bringing church to us.”

“Please call him off,” Mosa whispered, suddenly standing behind me, her delicate hands fisting the back of my shirt. “I don’t know if I can do it again, but I’ll try.”

I couldn’t see her face, neither could Mallory where he stood, but there were tears in her voice.

Mallory walked a careful circle to reach the table again without coming within arms reach of us. His arms crisscrossed his chest. His chin dropped low, but his gaze remained locked and loaded.

Mosa moved to stand by my side, her voice trembling when she talked.

“It’s never happened before…”

When she trailed off, I tried to fill in a little detail.

“I didn’t realize she was a cat at first, and I tried to push my alpha to stop her running. She swatted it back at me.”

His lips crinkled as he listened. So did his eyebrows.

It was a poorly kept secret in Night Falls, but I had learned that the pack leader’s sister, a beta wolf, had recently exhibited a strange power. From the sounds of it, she could redirect an alpha’s energy.

“I didn’t think about it at the time, but it might have been like Clover’s ability?”

“Doesn’t explain her smelling more like a wolf than a half-cat should.”

“No,” I agreed. “But I tried more than once as I chased her cat in my Alpha form.”
