Damon

“Whatthehellisgoing on?” I swung my legs over the edge of my bed.

Waking to gasps and whimpers was not my way of getting pulled out of an awesome dream with the mysterious chick named Lizzie.

I didn’t even know what she looked like, considering I’d never seen her, but her voice was enough to trigger my mind to create something. And now Sarah yelled her name.

“Wait, Damon.” Two hands took hold of my shoulders. “Lie back.”

“Screw that. I’ve been on my back long enough. What’s wrong?” Damn it, if only I could see. “Lizzie. Lizzie!”

“What happened?” an unfamiliar male voice asked.

“Panic attack,” Sarah answered. Her voice sounded farther away, so she must be looking away from me. “Shit, Damon, stay there, I need to get to Lizzie.”

“Screw that.” I stood. Sarah would be taking me with her. I reached out, pissed I had to have a hold of something to find out where I was going. “Where is she?”

“Floor. By the door.”

I’d been walking around this room for two days now, learning the nooks and crannies; with a rehab chick helping. If I remembered right, the door was six steps to my left. “Which side?”

“Left side.” Sarah guided me, and I hated how my still weak body depended on her to keep me upright. I counted and stopped at five steps, then took two to the left.

“Here?”

“Holy cow, yeah.”

I fell to my knees and reached out. A set of bare feet met my fingertips.

“Steady pulse,” the guy said. “Let me check her blood pressure.” Rustling followed, and I assumed he was getting a cuff. I’d had enough of those things lately, too. I needed to get the hell out of this place.

“What’s wrong with her, Sarah?”

“Long story,” Sarah said. “Anxiety. I think she got a pill in her.”

“BP is fine,” the nurse said. “I’ll be right back.”

I traced my fingers up her leg, skimmed her arm to her face as I inched forward. “Lizzie?”

She didn’t move. Other than the pulse beneath my fingertips, I would have thought she was dead the way she didn’t move.

“Come here,” I whispered as I worked my other arm beneath her legs. “Sarah, give me a hand.”

With Sarah’s help, we got Lizzie onto my hospital bed. A scent of grape tickled my senses, and I leaned forward. My nose met her skin by surprise; I hadn’t realized I was so close to her face, so I traced it along her warm skin. Felt like her forehead.

I shifted it down, and the scent got stronger. Sugar. She’d been eating something sweet. At that moment my mouth watered.

“What are you doing?” Sarah asked.

“I smell candy.”

“She always has Blow Pops. She was eating one when I came in earlier.” She let out a loud breath, maybe a laugh? Or a huff? I wasn’t sure. My sister-in-law was still very new to me. “You smell that?”

“Yeah. Where’s that nurse?” I asked, feeling all around Lizzie to make sure she was in the middle of the bed.

“I’ll check,” Sarah said. Within a breath I heard the door swoosh open.

I reached out, and my hand landed on Lizzie’s wrist, so I worked my way up until I felt the curve of her shoulder. “Lizzie?”
