But he was gone. He chose to leave. He chose fear over me. I shouldn’t wait for him. Shouldn’t hope he would walk through the door for me any time soon, right?

I should live a little.

Trent eased away. “I’m sorry. I thought—”

I pushed up to my toes and kissed him square on the mouth. “Sorry. Caught me by surprise.”

His eyes widened, and he took control of the kiss. “Good.” He kissed my cheek. “I’ve wanted to.” Another kiss to my other cheek. “Kiss you for a while.”

I clasped my hands around his neck.

“But you seemed shy.”

“I am. I mean with this stuff.”

“Not many boyfriends?”

I gulped hard. “A couple.”

He kissed me again. I waited for the spark to ignite, but it never did. No swirls in my belly. No heat. No excitement.

Damon had ruined me for other guys, hadn’t he?

Chapter Fifty-Seven

“Igaveyouafive, man,” I said, handing him some bills back. “Too much change.”

“Now, how thehelldid you know that?”

I scowled at the barista. “Wicked ninja moves. Learn to count, dude. It’s called basic arithmetic.”

He laughed and took the change back. “Get out of the way, blind man, I got people to serve.”

Someone gasped behind me, and I chuckled. So did Frank. He and I had started to hit it off since I came here every single afternoon. Needed my shot of energy before my night class.

“He’s kind of a dick, isn’t he?” I teased.

Someone laughed, and I heard Frank huff. Okay, college wasn’t so bad.

I pulled on Killer’s harness. “Left.”

My guide led me to the pickup counter. The little pup sure was pulling his weight around here.

“Good boy.” I found the counter and stood there, waiting.

“Large iced chai latte, please.” The voice I knew almost as well as my own wrapped around me.LizBelle.She always ordered that drink. That voice. Damn it, I’d missed it.

Missed her.

“Damon?” She was closer now.

I took in a deep breath and faced her. “Hey, Lizzie.”

“Omigosh,” she whispered. “I—what are you—”
