I tugged Killer’s collar as I reached for the space on the counter Frank always placed my cup. Thankfully I got the cup on the first try. No need to knock it over in front of an audience.

I’d rather spill it on Mr. Prep Boy, but that’d happen in a fantasy of mine later. Several times. Scalding hot coffee, too.

“Trent, you’re up.”

“Oh, I’ll get it,” Lizzie said and touched my arm. “Bye, Damon.”

“Later, LizBelle,” I said, moving forward. Killer guided me a few steps, then shifted slightly, probably steering me away from Trent. “Trent?” I said with a low voice.

“Uh, yeah.”

“Treat her right, or I’ll kick your ass into next week. That’s a promise.”

Chapter Fifty-Eight

Damon

Theclankofathick metal door sounded behind me. “Forward.” I pulled on Killer’s harness.

“Smart guy you got there,” the guard said from ahead of me. “Always thought that whole seeing-eye-dog thing was interesting. Watched a special on it once.”

Yeah, happy day for him. “Yeah. Gets me around. Where exactly are we going?”

“End of the hallway. That’s where the visits happen. You get fifteen minutes. Dog stays at the door with me. Five other tables in the room of visitors.”

“No phones in a booth of some sort?”

“He’s been a good boy, the one you’re visiting.”

Or Walker had connections. “Whatever.”

“Here we are. On your right.” The creak of the door sounded about two feet ahead of me. If I’d counted right, it was about fifty steps from the last door. Didn’t get the sense of any other doors along the way, either, then again, how would I know?

I’d been in jail a few times, but not prison. More of a community cell until Drey or one of my brothers bailed me out. This was the real deal, though.

“Hand over the reins, buddy,” the guard said.

“Heel, Killer.”

Laughter sounded behind me. “Nice name.”

“I get that a lot.” I offered the harness to the guard, and it was pulled from my hand. “Give me a little direction here,” I said while pulling out Mr. Magic from my back pocket. “You guys are taking my eyes.”

The guard coughed. “Oh. Um. How—”

“Give me your elbow and lead the way. Don’t worry. I don’t bite.” I tapped Mr. Magic. “Hard anyway.”

“Smartass.”

I laughed as I reached out and eventually found an elbow.

Eventually we made it to a table. Soft murmuring surrounded me, some laughter and kissing sounds even. “How far between the tables?”

“Ten feet or so. Chair here.” The seat hit the backs of my knees.

“Pull it out from behind me, and Mr. Magic here will clobber you.” I tapped the ground as I reached back, feeling for the chair.

“Your friend’s quite a comedian here,” the guard said.
