“Out. Spread the word my blindness is the real deal.”

“Oh, it is. I see it. Scott did, too. That Raymond, he was causing trouble. Sniffing around my turf since I was locked up. You got caught in the crosshairs.”

“And my girl, Lizzie.”

“Thought she wasn’t your girl.”

“Depends on how things go here. Walker, you’ve known me my entire life.”

“Yeah. Drey, too.”

“I never asked for much. Just did what I was told.”

“Even when it came to robbing your own family. Loyal and I knew it. Had plans for you.”

“Well, I’m asking for something now.”

“What?”

“Freedom. I might have a chance to do something. I’m in college. Might even try my hand at teaching.”

“Heard that.”

Damn, there wasn’t much he didn’t hear about, was there? “I’m asking for a chance. I want Lizzie. No threats. No watching over. Just let us be. Drey and Sarah, too.”

“You come in here asking a lot, boy.”

“I know. But it’s not a lot for you. All you’d have to do is spread the word. Make it law. Me and mine are off-limits.”

“And…”

“Mouths are sealed. Shut. Forever.”

“Forever.” He smacked my wrist. “What about that?”

“What do you suggest?”

“A good artist could curve that into someone’s name.” He laughed. “Might even look like a LizBelle.”

I smiled.

“I got your back as long as you got mine,” he said.

“Done.”

“Good seeing you, kid.” A warm hand slapped mine. “Don’t leave me hanging.”

I offered my fist, and he bumped it.

“You? A teacher?” He huffed, and his chair skidded across the floor. “Go figure.”

I shrugged.

“Drey here with you?”

I shook my head and pushed to my feet as I whipped Mr. Magic straight. “Just me.”

“And Killer.” He laughed. “Nice name. You do realize he’s a golden retriever, right?”
