He jammed it into his thigh and let out a long breath. “Coffee every day before night class. Good guy.”
“You’re taking classes?”
“Yeah. They let my sorry ass into this college.”
“That’s great.” I sat down. “Drugs working yet?”
“Getting there. What are you doing here?”
“Getting my caffeine fix, studying. I mean, I know it’s Thanksgiving tomorrow, but I wanted out of the house, and I know this place really well.”
“Makes sense,” he smiled. “No sidekick? What’s his name? Flint?”
“Trent. No. He’s in class.” I closed my psych book and pushed it to the corner of the table and dragged my hand over the cover.
Damon let out a long sigh and settled back in his chair.
“Here you go.” Frank approached, holding two drinks. “Figured you’d need another, Lizzie, if you have to sit here with this character.”
He set another chai latte in front of me, then put a drink in front of Damon. “Mocha latte.”
“Thanks, Frank. I’ll settle up later,” Damon said.
“Put it on mine.” I nodded at Frank.
“Yours?” Damon asked.
“Kind of have a running tab here. They bill me weekly.”
“Wow. Pays to know the rich and famous.” Damon sipped his coffee.
“Mocha latte, huh?”
“Only thing I drink.”
“Really?”
“This really awesome chick surprised me with this drink once. Haven’t had anything different since.”
“Sounds like a cool girl.”
“Coolest. Only she’s dating some dick preppy guy.” He shook his head and winced. “Okay. No shaking yet.”
I was still caught on what he’d said about Trent.
“Um…what class are you taking?” I asked, needing to change the subject. Trent and I had been together for a little bit now, but I still wasn’t sure about things. About him.
“Oh. I’m taking developmental psych.”
“Really.” That was surprising.
“Part of the education program. Only one class this semester. Night class. Testing it out.”
“Education. I—wow—what—” I took a sip of my drink, trying to collect my thoughts.
“What’s got you flustered, LizBelle?”
I really missed hearing that name. Only he ever called me that. “Nothing.”
