“So…anxiety. Where’s that come from?”

Nowthatwas a loaded question, wasn’t it? Lying here, vulnerable with Damon, it felt safe to tell him, yet not. Images of the crash and Mom… A spike of heat stabbed my chest. Instantly a noose cinched my neck.

Three. Six. Nine. Twelve.

Swiveling my ring, I drew in three deep breaths.

“Must be big,” Damon whispered. His voice was so soft, and it swathed my hammering heart. “Shhh, forget I asked, LizBelle. It’s okay.”

His grip around me tightened, and his nose nuzzled my hair.

“You’re safe here,” he said.

Tears burned my eyes. I wasn’t sure I’d evertrulyfeel safe anywhere, but here, in his arms, was pretty close.

“Tell me what you look like.” His voice was gentle. “I’m dying to know. As in, I will literally die if you don’t tell me right now.”

He’d been awake, for the most part, for couple of weeks, and we’d never really gotten to this part yet. He’d been busy with rehab, was often tired, but I could tell he was feeling stronger. I heard it in his voice. I wasn’t sure how I could, but I did.

“Drey says you have blue eyes,” he said.

“You asked about me?” I whispered breathlessly. I wasn’t sure the breathlessness was from the anxiety anymore, though. The thought of him wondering about me had me smiling and a more comfortable wave of warmth swarming through me.

Or maybe it was because he held me so closely in this dim room. It was by no means romantic, but considering my life and interaction with men… It was the most romantic situation I’d ever been in.

“I have blue eyes,” I finally said.

“What color blue?”

“Pretty much figured blue meant blue.”

“I’m blind, LizBelle, I need more to go on. Blue like a robin’s egg?”

“I don’t know. Blue. Nothing like yours, though. Yours are amazing. Blue like the sky on the clearest summer day.”

“Well, yeah, I’ve seen them for twenty years, I know they rock.”

I elbowed his gut.

“Ow. No punching the patient.” He coughed. “What do yours look like?”

“Um.” I searched my mind for a way to describe them. “Maybe like the water. You’ve been to the lakes around here, right?”

“Home of ten thousand lakes, so yeah, I’ve seen a few.”

“Sarcastic little stinker, aren’t you?”

“Like me better when I’m sleeping?”

“No. This—um—this is better.”

“So water.” He hugged me tighter.

“Like, well, when I flew here from New York we crossed over a patch where there were three lakes close together.”

“I know the area.”

“Dark blue like that. In the deepest parts.”
