“Sure. What do you need?”

“I need out of here.”

“As in…”

“Out. Of. Here. Will you help me?”

Chapter Eleven

Lizzie

“Wait, youwanttoleave? As in right now?” I asked, sitting up.

“After you check with the nurse on that going-outside order. Yes. As in, go out for a walk but never come back.”

“But—your therapy. You need—”

“I need out of here. I’ve been in this bed for weeks and my ass shows it. I’m not sick. I have to learn how to be blind, yeah, but not right this second. I have you to show me around.”

I jumped off the bed. “Oh no. You don’t have me. I mean, well, you do have me, but I—I can’t be—I don’t know my way.”

“Hold on, LizBelle. Relax.” He sat up and showed me his palms. Slowly he turned and let his feet hit the floor. “No passing out.”

“That’s exactly why I can’t do this. I can’t be—trusted.”

“You haven’t left my side all this time, butnowyou’re gonna? What? Novelty worn off?”

I sucked in a breath so fast I nearly choked on my spit. Novelty? He—what—he was insane.

“Why have you been here all this time? Day in. Day out. Lying with me. Reading to me. Watching movies with me. Why, LizBelle?”

“I don’t know. I—”

“That’s bullshit. You know. Why, Lizzie?”

“Because I care about you!”

“How? You don’t know me. Never met me.” He edged around the bed, groping it to find his way. His foot hit the corner. “Shit!”

I lunged for him and captured his arms. “Damon!”

He stilled beneath my touch. “Why, Lizzie? Tell me why.”

“I couldn’t leave you. I—you—your mom.”

He gripped my arms below the shoulders. “I need to know.”

“Because I know what it’s like to wake up and your family’s gone!” I pushed away, tears stinging my eyes. “Lying in that bed not knowing your mom died. Waking up to find out she was gone. Your whole life changed forever. Nothing would ever be the same. I—I didn’t have anyone there for me. No one.”

I woke up alone. An orphan. No family around to take care of me. No one to sit with me while I recovered. Nothing. I was utterly alone.

Damon had people, yeah, his brother, Angelina, Sarah, and Hunter, but none of them knew. I did. I knew what it was like to wake up different. I had to be here for Damon. Had to take care of him. He needed me.

I reached for the tiny table beside the bed. The papers on there were crooked. Too crooked. The cup was in the wrong spot. Only two things on there. Where’s another cup? Or something. I snagged the TV control and set it there.

Three items perfectly aligned with the side of the desk.

Neat.
