He moaned and slid his tongue in. Stroking mine with an urgency that fueled the tickle in my stomach to a roaring fire. He was lying on the hard hospital floor. I should be helping him up, but instead, I shifted onto him.

His hand slid down my back to my butt and pressed me to him. “LizBelle.”

I almost squealed at the contact, it felt so good. A streak of pleasure clenched my stomach. I’d never felt anything like this. So intense. I’d seen plenty of movies that got me riled up, but this guy, this virtual stranger I’d been hanging out with for such a short time, triggered this in me. Someone I could actually touch. Hold. Talk to. He was real.

And he wanted me.

He grunted and tensed beneath me. I pulled up slightly and curved my hands around his head so his skull wasn’t on the hard floor.

His jaw tensed, but he didn’t appear to be in pain. “You okay?”

“Yeah. Good.” And I was. Well, other than breathless and totally turned on.

I met his mouth with a burst of energy, and I got lost in his kiss. The feel of him. His scent. I craved it all.

The door whooshed open, and I rolled off Damon. He shifted to the side and pushed to his feet as Nurse Ray strode in, but Damon kept his back to us.

Everything was happening so fast I couldn’t track it. If the room would stop spinning for a second I might be able to get my bearings.

“Okay. I have your—” He stopped. “You okay? You’re not going to pass out again, are you?”

“No. I’m fine.”I am fine. I told myself. No passing out. I was strong. I needed to be for Damon. I pressed my palm to my abdomen, willing it to stop swirling so I could focus. “What’s going on?”

“Here.” He offered me a white walking stick and a pager-type device. “OT says he needs to start practicing with this. She’ll be up tomorrow to give him more training. This is a help button in case anything goes wrong out there.”

I took the items, and I noticed how much my hands were shaking. It wasn’t from anxiety or fear though, it was from Damon. My body pulsed as I imagined him pressed against me.Whew.

“Okay. I’ll check in at the end of my shift.” He turned on his squeaky shoes and walked out of the room, leaving a thick, heavy silence.

Shuffling behind me had me turning around. Damon was moving to his left, his back still to me. He leaned forward, reaching for the wall to guide him. I touched his back, and he tensed.

“I got it.” His voice was curt and loud so I backed off. He made it to the bathroom. “Clothes in here?”

“Yeah, on the shelf. You need me—”

“No. I got this.” And with that, he slammed the door behind him.

Glancing around the room, I found my Blow Pop on the floor. No way of eating that now. I picked it up, hating to waste so much, and tossed it in the garbage can beside the door.

What happened? I thought that kiss was pretty freaking awesome, but he was suddenly so angry. Maybe I screwed up? It wasn’t like I knew what I was doing.

I smoothed my hand down the front of my shirt and adjusted my ring. One more thing…what needed straightening? I smoothed out the sheets on his bed.

Three pillows. Two on the bottom, one on top. I patted the tops. Not quite perfect. The lines were a little off. Couldn’t have that.

I messed them up and started over. Had…to…be…

“There,” I said to myself, admiring the perfectly adjusted pillows.

Something clanked in the bathroom. Curses streamed out from beneath the door, and I stepped closer. “Don’t come in here. I got it. Damn button fly jeans.”

I rested my palm on the door, listening to him on the other side, presumably dressing. It must be so difficult without being able to see. I couldn’t even imagine.

He seemed okay with it, almost. Well, not okay, but he joked about it. It had to be a defense mechanism, but still. I’d be a bumbling mess if this were happening to me.

Then again, I was already a bumbling mess.

Wait, no I wasn’t. I was here! I’d overcome a lot to get this far.
