I’d make it up to her.

“Do you…er…did you have a place?” she asked.

“That’d be a no.” Last place I’d lived was on a cot in the club Walker owned. Which was mostly a cover to launder all his nasty businesses.

A ding sounded, and I heard something sliding. The doors. Yeah, that was the elevator doors opening. Cool. It was pretty weird I could figure things out by sound, since I couldn’t see them.

“It’s empty, stepping in now.” She led me in, and I heard her tap a button. “Ground floor I guess.”

“You’re such a rebel. Can we make a stop first?”

“No. Wait. What?”

“A stop. As in before we get to your apartment. Hey, wait, you said hotel.”

“Top floor. Angelina owns it, I’m just staying there.”

“Until you find your own place?”

“Something like that.”

The floor beneath me shifted as the elevator took us down. Now that was a weird feeling. “I want pizza. Thick-crusted full-of-greasy-cheese-goodness pizza. Please tell me you like pizza.”

“I love pizza. But now? I mean, we, you’re—”

“Hungry. I’ve been eating that hospital crap for weeks, so I needrealfood.”

“And pizza’s real food?”

“Hell yeah. It’s one of the four main food groups.”

“I don’t know where a pizza place is. I don’t know the area at all. I—”

“Have a smart phone. Give it to me, I’ll search—er—cancel that. Do you have Google maps? Search pizza places.”

The elevator slowed, and she let out a deep breath. Shuffling followed, subtle sounds, like brushing, or…I couldn’t place it. But I always heard it around her. Like she was combing her hair.

The doors rolled open, and Lizzie led me out. “Info desk ahead. She’s watching us. Crap.”

“Just wave and tell her to have a good night.”

Lizzie slowed, and I heard her say what I’d told her to.

“How far until the door?” I asked. My heart pounded so hard I had to take in an extra breath. So close to freedom I could taste the cheesy pizza goodness now.

“Close.”

“How many steps?”

“I don’t know. Like twenty feet or so?” She huffed, and I heard a crunch.

A blast of grape and sugar followed, and I inhaled. “Grape. I’m so tasting that when we get outside.”

“Damon,” she whispered.

It was going to be fun showing her a thing or two.

“Pizza, please?”
