“You really think that? That it’s not a biggie and not the most insane thing you’ve ever seen?” She coughed. “Er…heard.”

“Nice save.” I wiggled my fingers, hopefully signaling her to take my hand, but she was leaving me hanging. “And no. It’s not the most insane thing I’ve everseen.” If she knew half the shit I’d seen anddonethese past few years.

She let out a long breath, and her fingers slid into my hand.

“Jeez. Thought you were going to leave me hanging.” I squeezed her hand. “Count as much as you want, girl.”

“I’m smiling right now.”

“I bet it’s fuc—pretty freaking amazing.”

She laughed.

“Two Pepsis, extra large.” I heard a plastic cup hit the table in front of me, and Lizzie loosened her grip on my hand. I held tighter, not ready to let it go. I couldn’t get enough of her. What was that all about?

Then again, I’d been in a coma for about a month, then stuck in rehab these past few weeks, and she’d been by my side the entire time. With all that going on, though, I hadn’t really gotten to know her very well yet.

Eventually I got the straw into my mouth and took two long gulps. The bubbles burned, but I loved it. I’d really missed soda.

“Are you really okay with the blindness?”

“Are you kidding me? No way in hell.”

“But you joke. And you’re not scared to be out walking around. You just waltzed right out of the hospital like it didn’t even matter.” She clicked her tongue, and I envisioned her shaking her head. “That’s amazing.”

“It’s temporary. The blindness. No way this is going to stick.”

“What if it’s not temporary? Damon—”

“I’m still healing.” I took another gulp. I had to believe that. No way could I be blind forever. I was twenty, still had a life to live. No way.

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have—”

“LizBelle.” I tightened my hold. “Quit saying you’re sorry. Look. I’ll beat the blindness. I’ll kick its ass. Like you did to get where you are, girl. Tough little shit.”

“What?”

“I’m not the brightest light bulb out there. You’ll find that out, especially when you learn about my shit. But, girl, even if I can’t see you, I can tell something happened to you that made you all up with the anxiety and passing out.”

Her hold on me tightened, but she didn’t say anything. Didn’t need to. It was amazing how much I could tell from her holding my hand. I didn’t need sight at that moment. She was just as messed up as I was.

Maybe that was why we fit together so well.

Chapter Fourteen

Lizzie

IlovedhowacceptingDamon was. To laugh at my insanity, and then how he blatantly said he’d not be blind forever like that was how it was. Talk about inspiring. My only fear was when he found out the blindness was permanent. How would he react to that?

“Hey man. Holy shit, Damon. What’s up?” A guy with spiked blond hair stormed the table, his fist out.

Damon reached for me. He did that a lot. Not that I minded.

“Dude. What’s up?” The guy held his fist up, and his brows crinkled as he regarded Damon with curious, deep brown eyes.

“Um…” I reached for the guy’s hand. “He can’t—”

“What’s up, Scott?” Damon held his fist up, quite a bit off target, and held it there.
