“No. I mean…I didn’t know a ton about you yet, other than you were in a gang, and that’s how you ended up the way you did. But I knew Drey. I’ve known him a while, and he came to the hospital every day and we talked. So, I wondered how much you were like him.”

“So not.”

“Yeah. You’re different. You’re you. I like learning about you.”And kissing you. “Look. I’m a mess, too,” I said, my voice cracking. “I—we—can help each other get better.”

He groaned and held onto me tighter. “Wish it was that easy.”

“Then make it that easy.”

“Not sure how.” His breath wandered over my lips and ignited a tingle deep in my belly.

I pushed up and sealed my mouth over his. That was howwe made things easier. Being together. Facing together anything that was thrown at us.

Here I was, guiding him around, shopping in a strange mall I’d been to only a few times. I was strong. I could be there for him, and myself. I’d sat by his side while he slept, and even if he didn’t talk during that time, I still felt like I knew him. Being without him wasn’t an option I was okay with. I had to get to know him for real.

Good and bad. Because I knew I had a crapload of good and bad in me, so we were perfect for each other.

I stumbled to the side, but Damon put out his hand and palmed the wall, steadying us. I giggled against his mouth.

“It’s always the quiet, shy ones who are the wildcats.” He kissed me harder.

There was a sense of urgency that tripped my trigger. My heart sprinted into record speed and my stomach felt like it did on the top of the highest roller coaster about to plummet down. Such a rush.

“Hey. How are you guys—whoa,” Amber’s voice sliced through the moment. “Do I even want to know what’s going on in there?”

“No,” Damon said, then kissed me again.

I slapped his arm. “Damon.”

“Don’t worry, it’s notthat,” Damon said, still keeping his mouth on mine. “It was the jeans. She couldn’t resist.”

“Omigosh.” I turned my head and covered my face with my hands, totally mortified.

Amber laughed, and I heard her walk away.

“Admit it. You couldn’t resist with me looking this hot.”

“Damon!” I slapped his chest again.

“So, since we made out in a dressing room, I think this makes you my girlfriend.”

“What about the getting your shit together?”

“Well, there’s that. But that doesn’t make you any less my girlfriend.” He peeled away my hand from my face. “Just means you’re gonna have your hands full with me. You good with that?”

“Yep.”

“You say that now.”

“I’m sure I got you beat on a few things.”

“I’m looking forward to finding out.” He leaned in and kissed my eye. “Damn it. I was aiming for your mouth.”
