I felt his lips touch my forehead. Tears burned my eyes. Why thehelldid that question hit me so hard right now? I made it out of New York. Beat agoraphobia. Was even in a car again. How…

Rain. Yes. That’s what it was. That guy. He reminded me of the guy who pulled the trigger. It wasn’t him. The guy looked way different, but he was the same size and shape. And the shaved head.

That’s it. That’s what it was.

The guy who’d executed my parents, he’d pulled off his skullcap. The moon shone off his bald head.

Damn it!

“What about Rain?” Damon asked.

I didn’t remember saying his name, but I must have.

“Nothing. I think he freaked me out more than I realized.” I let out a long breath. “I’m good. Whew.”

“If you say so.” He kissed my forehead. “Okay, so, as yourboyfriend, do I get to come up to your place and push the limits of second base?”

“Oh my gosh.”

“You know I say stuff like that just to hear you say that, right?”

“You’re bad.”

“Well, duh. So what do you say?”

“Maybe next time. I—I’m beat.”

He twined his fingers with mine. “Beat, huh?”

I squeezed his hand. “Yeah.”

“Okay, then. What’s on tap for our next date? Shopping for bed linens?”

“Um…”

“Well, it was clothes today. My new place needs something more, I think.”

“Didn’t Drey set it up for you?”

“I don’t know. I can’t see it.” He laughed. “When you’re up for it, you can come over and check out the bedroom.” He winked. “And see if I need sheets.”

“You stinker.” I kissed him on the mouth.

I loved how he made me laugh. How he made me feel normal. I’d just beaten down a panic attack, and he was joking about something else as if it were perfectly normal to have a panic attack. Didn’t make me feel stupid. Didn’t judge me. Just…was.

I wish I could just…be.

Chapter Thirty

Damon

“I’llknockyouonyour ass if you don’t widen your stance.” Jeff gently kicked my ankles.

“Watch it. Don’t get all gropey with me. I got a girl.” I widened my stance.

“Funny, joker. Focus. You’re blind, your balance is challenged. Now hit the bag.”

I swung, and my padded fist met the kicking bag. That time I didn’t fall off-balance. Okay, maybe this wide stance had something to it.
