“You two are gonna make me fat!” Sarah slouched into the couch.

“It’ll give Drey something more to hang onto,” Angelina said as she hustled to the door.

I followed her out and within minutes I was at Slater’s Coffee Shop, standing in line. There was never a slow time here.

That was okay, though. I totally wanted it to take a while. The mid-May air was fresh and full of promise. I had about two weeks until my college classes started, then I would be super busy. Which might be good if Damon didn’t pull his head out of his butt soon. I needed to find a time filler if he—

“Hey sunshine,” someone said from behind me. I turned to find that guy from the pizza place. Same spiked blond hair and deep brown eyes. The sun spilled over his tall frame, and his eyebrow barb reflected the bright rays right into my eyes.

What was his name again?

“Um, hi.” I stepped forward in line, filing through the memory of the first time I saw him after I’d busted Damon out of the hospital. “Scott, right?”

“Got a little smarty on our hands here. You remembered.” He leered. “Where’s our buddy?”

“Our buddy? I—”

“Damon. Haven’t seen him around.”

“Oh.” Wait a second, haven’t seen him around? “Do you live around here?”

“No. Thought he was staying with ya.”

Okay, the creep factor escalated a tad bit there. Had he been spying on me? “What do you mean?”

“That night. At the pizza place. You seemed cozy. Thought he went home with you.”

“And how do you know where I call home?”

He smiled. “Busted.”

Yeah, that smile didn’t calm my nerves one iota. I stepped away. Suddenly his nearly six-foot height felt like fifteen feet.

“Damon’s my buddy. I’m just curious. He was out of it for so long, then up and at ’em all of a sudden. Want to know about what he’s going through. You know, because we’re connected. He’s my guy.”

Sure as shit, Scott’s wrist bore the gang symbol that matched Damon’s. “Gang brother connection?”

“You could say that.”

“Then why don’t you ask him?”

“You know how to reach him?”

“Nope.” I totally did, but he didn’t need to know that. Damon had no business barking up that tree again.

Scott eyed me and crossed his arms. “So. If I checked your phone, I wouldn’t find Damon’s number in there?”

“First of all, you’re not touching my phone. And second, nope. Haven’t talked to that jerk in five days.” My heart cracked a little saying that out loud. Then a spark of anger about it flared to life. “So figure things out for yourself.”

I turned around and stepped up to place my order. He joined me and added a mocha to my order. What a jerk!

Throwing a look over my shoulder I said, “He’s got it,” and stepped to the pickup counter.

If he was going to barge into things he could pay for our drinks.

His predatory gaze gave me the chills as he approached me in the order pickup area. “Nice one.”

I shrugged, feigning disinterest, but my heart was beginning to cramp. Three turns of my ring wasn’t working to calm it down, either.
