I felt the car sway again. “Turning right. Second one, which means we’re almost to Lizzie’s.”

Counting ruled my life right now. How many steps to the door. To the end of the driveway. To the bathroom. Everything was counting.

“You finally gonna nut up and go see Lizzie?”

We’d driven here every single day for five days so I could practice. But I couldn’t bring myself to go see her yet. I was brutally mean to her at the hospital. She was so nice, though, and just took it. She did not deserve my attitude.

Next step would be navigating the bus lines. Or taxis. Not to mention Braille. I was so putting that off. The minute I started learning that was the minute I accepted that this was permanent. I knew it was, but I was such a head case.

“Hey, I see Scott up there.”

“Scott? As in second fuckhead to Walker?”

The car slowed, and my gut clenched. What was he doing this far north? So close to my Lizzie?

“What’s he doing?” I asked, gripping the dashboard.

“Watching across the street. The coffee shop—oh shit.” The car stopped fast enough that my seat belt locked. “That’s Lizzie coming out of there.”

“My Lizzie? What do you mean, coming out of where? What’s happening?” I reached for the door handle. “Let me out.”

“Wait.” Drey put his arm across my chest. “Let me pull over.”

A car honked, and I felt the sharp sway of the SUV and then an abrupt stop. The tires squealing didn’t help my nerves.Shit. Scott was hanging around Lizzie?

“Where is he now? Is she okay?”

“Fine. He’s across the street from her. But he’s drinking coffee from the same place. She’s headed up the sidewalk.” The door opened. “I’m coming to your side.”

I clicked Mr. Magic open so I was ready to start walking. Clawing at the side of the door, I snagged the latch and pushed the door open. He better not hurt her. Better not even talk to her.

“He saw us. He’s coming this way.” Drey helped me down. “Does he always have that shit-eating grin on his face?”

“Yes.”Damn, that meant business. Or he had a secret. Whichever, it wasn’t good. “See anyone else from the gang?”

“No. They don’t usually come this far north, but I’m not seeing anyone with marks lurking around that I can tell.”

Springtime made it easier. Members wanted to show their ink with their T-shirts and tank tops. Even if they looked ridiculous.

“Hey man,” Scott said. “You go into hiding or something?”

I held my fist out, waiting for him to bump it. “What’s up?”

He smacked my knuckles and yanked me into a hug. “Nice to see you up and around.”

Yeah, sure it was. “What brings you up north?”

“Lookin’ for you, man. Caught up with your honey. Grabbed some coffee, checking out the area.”

“Stay away from Lizzie.” I stepped forward.

“Hey man,” Drey said, easing in front of me. “What’s going on?”

A long pause punctuated the silence before Scott spoke. “Just checking up.”

“Nothing to check up on,” Drey said. “It’s all good.”

“Is that true, Damon?” I heard him sip his coffee. He always was a slurper.
