“You’re almost there.” I felt her breath against my cheek. “At least my toe stopped bleeding.”

“A dance teacheranda comedienne.” I huffed, frustrated at how I was so not getting this dancing thing.

Then again, Andrew, my mobility coach, was in the corner, watching us. This was pretty much my final before graduating from training.

No pressure there.

“Surprising your girl with a dance at the party? I wish there were more guys out there like you,” Roberta said.

“Yeah, well, I used to be able to dance. This being blind shit is for the birds.” I gently led her in a revolution. “Sweet. I didn’t feel any toes there.”

“Nice and relaxed. Remember what Andrew said. Concentrate on the sounds, keep the movements slow, and breathe.” She let out a breath, and a wave of mint and a hint of her rose perfume washed over me. “We’ve been meeting for a couple of weeks now and you’ve not told me what the party is for. Surprise for your girl?”

“Brother got married while I was in a coma. Celebrating that, me waking up, and just celebrating life, I guess.” She didn’t need to know anything about the gang part.

“Your girl is lucky.”

“I’m the lucky one.”

“Nice. You missed the coffee table.”

“Not for your lack of trying to distract me.” I spun and dipped her. “That’s extra credit, Andrew.”

I heard him snicker from the corner where he was perched. He had an uncanny ability to get very quiet. It was needed for his training, but it was also kind of creepy.

“Nicely done!” Roberta clapped, then warm fingers brushed my forehead and patted my shoulders. The music was still blaring, the wind whipping in from the open windows behind me, but it was nice and cool.

I couldn’t wait for LizBelle to come see the place. Sure, it was my brother’s guesthouse, but she’d not yet come here since I’d busted out of the hospital, and I wanted to surprise her.

Roberta’s hand slid down my arm to my hand. I guided her four steps to the left to where the bar was. Following along with my hands skimming the countertop, I brought us to the kitchen where the drinks would be.

“Excellent.”

“No Mr. Magic, either.” Dusting my fingertips along the marble top, I found the tray of wineglasses. Plastic for now, but the party would have glass.

I picked up the glass by its stem and presented it to her.

“A little slower,” Roberta said.

“Shit.” I felt water splash along my hand.

“Doing great,” Andrew said from the far corner. “Spatially you had it.”

Roberta took the cup, and I slowly reached for another. This time I didn’t knock any over.Sweet. I held my drink up and said, “Cheers.”

Roberta tapped hers against mine, and I brought the plastic glass to my lips.

“I still think we should just have bottles of beer. That’s what I want to drink anyway.”

“I’m with you,” Roberta said.

“Me too,” Andrew said from his corner. “Excuse me, I need to hit the restroom.”

“You can use my bathroom if you give me a certificate of graduation,” I teased.

“Funny.”

“He’s flicking me off, isn’t he?” I asked Roberta.
