Really, it was for me more than him, but still.

My phone vibrated beside me. It was Angelina. I clicked silent. I needed quiet. We’d been driving around for a while because I wasn’t ready to go home yet. There had to be an explanation for what I saw. Logical one. But I freaked.

I should have stayed. Talked to Damon about it.

Stupid mind. Stupid broken mind.

My thoughts always went to the worst. And after such a great day. I’d stepped on a crack. A crack!

As dumb as that’d sound to pretty much anyone who wasn’t struggling with OCD, it was huge for me. Monumental in getting better.

Maybe that was why seeing him withherhurt so bad. I’d been excited—

A text from Angelina flashed on my home screen. How’d your adventure go?

I snatched the phone and typed,Fine. Coming home now.

Date night!

Maybe not. I typed a smiley face and tossed the phone into my purse, then dumped everything else on it.

Talk about polar emotions today. This sucked!

I wasn’t sure how long we’d driven around, but finally the driver steered the limo to the hotel entrance. The day was starting to fade into night, so the hotel lights were flickering on. Two limos were parked beneath the awning, and girls with fancy, flowing dresses stood by open doors, posing for pictures.

A bride and groom strode through the doors, hand in hand, trailed by five couples. They were all laughing, playing around and smiling. The bride, dressed in head-to-toe white, hugged her husband.

He picked her up and twirled her around as he kissed her lips. Bulbs flashed, documenting the special day. One filled with love. Excitement. Promise.

I wanted that. Badly. I’d always wanted a storybook romance, but now that I was out and about, it made me want it all that much more. If I could keep my damn emotions leashed.

“We’ll have to sit here for a bit, Lizzie, until they pull away,” Carl said.

“That’s fine.” It was nice watching them.

A few minutes passed, pictures were taken, and the two limos pulled away. Carl steered the car up, and I pushed open the door. “Thanks!”

“Take care, Lizzie.”

Carl was such a sweetheart. Didn’t say much, but the way he looked at me in the rearview mirror, it was enough. He knew I was upset. Got to give the guy props, he didn’t say anything.

“Hey.” Doug’s voice had me turning around.

He was coming from the valet area, holding his clipboard. Wearing the standard three-piece suit for work, he strode toward me. Sure did have the confidence thing going on. The breeze shuffled his hair along his forehead, and he flipped it away.

“Hi,” I said as I stepped away from the car.

“You okay?” He stopped in front of me.

“Yeah. Wedding huh?”

He grabbed my hand. “Come on. There’s something I want to show you.”

He tugged me through the front doors, and I caught myself watching for the tile lines.Damn it.

I stepped out, touching one on purpose, and I mentally shouted, “SCREW YOU!”

My heart rate hiked up, but I followed Doug. He tossed his clipboard on the front desk and hurried me down the hallway. We passed the conference room I’d let Damon pass out in, and I bit my inner cheek.
