“That girl is all over the place. It’s nice to see, actually. You know, I knew she’d find her way out of that apartment of hers.”

“You did, huh?” I soaked a banana in the dark goodness. “How’s that?”

“Could tell.” He winked at me. “I can tell things about people.”

I plopped onto the floor and leaned against the stage that held the yumminess. “Yeah? What can you tell about me?”

“Something’s wrong and it has to do with Damon.” He sat beside me.

“Nothing’s wrong.” I gulped. “Just wanted to tell him some good news, but he wasn’t home.”

“No phone?”

“Busy.”

“What’s your good news?”

“I stepped on a crack today.”

His eyebrows pulled together for a brief second, then said, “Crack, as in, you don’t step on cracks ever and today you did?”

“Exactly.” A flash of confusion contorted his face. His cheeks reddened a little, and he shifted forward, resting his elbows on his knees as he sat cross-legged.

That had to be uncomfortable, considering he was wearing a suit. But it was sweet that he was sitting next to me.

“Not really sure what to say to that.” He shrugged. “Congrats?”

I laughed. “Ever hear of OCD?”

“Sure.” His eyes widened as if something clicked into place. “You have OCD.”

“Bingo.”

“I always wondered why—um—never mind. So a crack. Stepping on a crack. I get it.”

Okay, he was a little slow. Cute, but a little slow.

“That’s good, right? That means progress.”

“You could say that.”

“And that’s what you wanted to tell Damon. But he wasn’t there.”

I slouched.

“Cracks.” He jumped up. “Stepping on cracks deserves more chocolate. What’s next? I see some Starbursts here. Or how about a gummy worm?”

I pushed to my feet. “They donothave gummy worms.”

“I told you. Anything and everything.” He held a chocolate rose in my direction. “Such an accomplishment deserves being completely spoiled. So—”

“I’llbe doing the spoiling,” Damon yelled from the doorway.

Even from twenty feet away I saw the hard angles Damon’s tense jaw formed. The creases along his forehead. And his white knuckles gripping the door and his walking stick.

“Congrats,” Doug whispered and handed me the chocolate rose. “See you later.”

He turned to the door that led to the kitchen, then cast a quick look at Damon.
