“Seewhat?”

She blinks, and I look at her with concern as her eyes start to water again.

“Alice—”

She turns away, dabbing at her eyes with a napkin.

“I loved him, you know. Iggy, I mean.”

“Of course, I know that.”

“I mean more than anything. And I knew he was flawed—”

“Alice, come on—”

“Please, Jack. Iggy was a flawed man, and we both know it, even though we both still loved him.”

She turns back to me, her eyes red and puffy, tears rolling down her cheeks.

“Jackson, of course Melody isn't yours. Just like she’s not Will’s, either.”

My brow furrows.

“I don't understand what you’re—”

“She's Iggy’s, Jackson.”

The world goes numb as the bomb detonates right in front of my face.

“Jackson, Melody isIggy'sdaughter.”

There'sa moment of free fall. It’s the sensation of the bottom dropping out, and all of me plummeting into the black hole of an abyss beneath my feet. For a second, it’s almost like the feeling of being high, or that moment when drunk turns into blackout.

Except the fall just keeps happening.

There is no bottom. Instead, I stand there, swaying on my feet, gripping Alice's kitchen countertop as my eyes stab into her.

“What the fuck…” I whisper quietly.

Her face scrunches up.

“Jackson—”

“What. The.Fuck.”

I start to back away, shaking my head.

“No.”

“Jackson, please sit.”

“No.” My head shakes violently. “No, there’s no fucking way—”

“Jackson!”

Her voice strikes out, hitting me like a slap and shaking me from the free-fall. I blink, and finally, I can actually feel my own skin, and my own pulse thudding in my ears.
