I wasn’t prepared to feel my legs go numb. I wasn’t prepared for the overwhelming desire to grab her in my arms and bruise the ever-loving fuck out of her lips.

And I’m still trying to process looking at her in the flesh for the first time in four months, when she turns, and our eyes lock.

Yes, I’m still fucking angry. Yes, I still want to scream in her face. But when I march in a straight line, shoving people out of my path as I storm towards her, all I really want is to be near her.

Melody’s face pales, her eyes growing wide as saucers as I shove my way through two guys in leather jackets they clearly bought yesterday. But when I’m finally standing right in front of her, glaring down into her heart-stopping face, it’s like the crowd of Johnny Depps around us suddenly fades away.

And it’s just her and I.

“Jackson…”

Her face drains of even more color as I loom over her.

“You can’t—”

“Just walk away.”

The words that fall out of my mouth makemeblink in surprise. Because I just marched over here ready to rip her to pieces, or to demand answers. But now that I’m here, standing inches from her, able to touch her if I wanted to for the first time in months? That all falls away.

And instead, all I want is her.

Without the baggage. Without the war. Without the anger.

Just her.

“Just walk away,” I growl quietly.

My hand reaches out, and she jolts, flushing as it lands on her hip.

“Walk away, with me, right now.”

She blinks rapidly, swallowing.

“What?”

“Drop all of it, sweetheart. And just leave it.”

She slowly shakes her head, her eyes locked onto me.

“I—Jackson Ican’t…”

“Because you don’t want to, or because of what—”

“Because if I do…” her eyes squeeze shut with a pain that cuts into me.

“Jackson, if I do, she’ll destroy you.”

“I don’t give ashit,” I snarl quietly.

“You should.”

She opens her eyes, and real fear creeps over her face.

“Jackson, youshould. Judy has a whole story ready to drop if she even sees you here—”

“All we need,” I growl. “All we’ve ever needed, is right here. Just you and me, Melody,” I whisper. “And the island.”

“It’s not your sanctuary anymore, Jackson,” she croaks in a brittle voice. “They’d find us there. The whole world knows about—”
