Bones can heal. Skin can be repaired.

The nerves and tendons in his hands will never be the same again, though.

Kurt will never play again.

When I’m done, I actually have to check his pulse, since he blacked out when I started in on his right hand. But he’s alive.

Unfortunately.

I should kill him. Iwantto kill him. But I also just got back to the world. Going to prison for murder sounds like kind of a bummer, to be honest.

And so, I leave him there, like the shattered, broken monster he is. I wipe the blood off my shoes and knuckles and head for the door. But when I open it, I flinch as I almost walk right into a familiar redhead.

With a guitar case slung over her shoulder.

Melody’s friend June gapes at me. Then she looks past me, and her face turns white.

“Uhh…”

“It would probably be for the best if you pretend you didn’t see that.”

Her eyes narrow.

“Is that Kurt Harrison?”

“It is.”

“Is he dead?”

I shake my head. June’s mouth thins.

“It’s him, isn’t it?” Her eyes narrow as she shakes her head. “The guy who…you know.”

I don’t say anything, but she’s glaring pure hate at Kurt’s motionless body.

“I’ve kinda put the pieces together before. He was dating Judy about the same time, and it’s kind of an open secret in the music world about the shit he’s into.”

She pushes past me before I can stop her.

“June—”

She kicks Kurt in the balls, hard. Then she does it again, and again, and again, before I finally close the dressing room door, walk over, and put a hand on her shoulder.

She takes a breath, exhaling and then spitting on Kurt’s unconscious face.

“Fuckingpig.”

“What were you doing, coming here?”

She turns, eying me.

“I was looking for Melody.”

“And you got backstage…how?”

“You mean how because I’m not rich and famous like you?”

“Basically.”
