She rolls her eyes in response, but still smiles.

“Ethan and Lexie are at a booth over there,” Tyler says to me, hitching a thumb over his shoulder.

I nod, bending down to whisper in Tessa’s ear, “Come on.” Pressing light fingertips to her lower back, I guide her over to where her friend is sitting, the two of us squeezing into the booth opposite them.

“How’d you manage to get this table?” I ask. “They’re all full.”

“I’ve got connections,” Lexie says. “I used to work here.”

Ethan removes his arm from around her shoulders and slides out of the booth. “But perfect timing. I didn’t want to lose our spot, but I’m ready to dance.”

He holds a hand out to Lexie, who takes it and joins him. “Have fun,” she says to Tessa, a grin on her lips.

Tessa stares at her, something wordless passing between them, and Lexie laughs before she and Ethan disappear to the dance floor.

What was that about?

Tessa slumps in her seat, taking another sip of her cocktail.

“You seem annoyed.”

She looks over at me, then away, setting her drink down. “Sorry.”

“I thought you were excited about tonight.” She was in the car on the way over, at least.

“I was. I mean, I am. I just…” She runs a hand through her long hair, playing with the ends. “I guess I’m waiting for Kelsey to come claim you for her dance.”

What? “I never said I was dancing with her.”

She blinks up at me. “You’re not?”

“No.” From our brief meeting, that girl had seemed way too high maintenance. And besides, she’s not the one I’m interested in.

“Why?”

I take a swallow of my beer, not sure how much I should say. “I’d rather hang out with you.”

“You would?”

Is she going to ask questions in response to everything I say? “Yeah. Unless you wanted to meet someone else tonight,” I force myself to add. That’s kind of the point of coming to a place like this, isn’t it?

“No,” she insists, so loudly it surprises me for a moment. “I mean, I just wanted to be with friends. Not meet anyone.”

I nod, something in my gut easing.

She smiles shyly at me. “I bet you’re an amazing dancer, though.”

I nearly choke on my sip of beer. “What? I don’t dance.”

“I don’t believe that for one second.” She turns to me, more animated now. “I saw you in the ring. The way you move.”

She was watching how I move? “Is this where you call me smart again?”

She laughs, her dark eyes sparkling. “I still maintain it’s true.”

“I looked it up, you know.” I pick at the label of my beer bottle, peeling back the edge. “Took this online quiz and you were spot on. I hit all the marks for kinesthetic intelligence.”

She lightly taps my shoulder. “Look at you, Mister Genius.”
