Lexi looked at him, smiling devilishly as she finished chewing on an egg roll. “Yes, indeed I do.”

He sipped at his wine, giving her a flirty look as he leaned forward.

“So tell me about your skills then, Ms. Hart.”

Her cheeks warmed, and electricity moved through her legs. She clamped them together again, not able to meet his eyes without letting out a groan.

“Well, you know I’m a half-shifter, of course,” she began, “which I know is problematic for a lot of people. But my mother descended from witches, which I think has made up for what my sisters and I lack in shifting abilities.”

Xander dropped his fork, then leaned forward on his palms. It was a comical look, but he was seriously intrigued.

“Go on,” he nearly growled.

“My mother’s mother could heal others, and that is my talent, too,” Lexi said, feeling bashful and gazing down at her plate.

“That is incredible.”

Lexi was rarely able to brag about her relation to witches because she had been surrounded by so many shifters in her life. So, for the first time in a while, hearing the lilt of excitement in Xander’s tone made her feel completely empowered by her own skills.

“My sisters have other skills, but that is mine. Maybe we can find a place for that in your pack.”

It took all of her courage to gaze up at Xander. His eyes had a way of pulling her in, which was difficult to cope with, especially when they were in public, and she was trying to remain restrained in her attraction. When she finally did, she nearly swooned to the floor like some 19th-century heroine.

His smile was large and beaming. It made all of the other edges of his sharp face stand out, making the look somewhat intimidating in its sincerity. Her tongue slid out of her mouth in an effort to keep from breaking out into a flirtatious giggle.

“I do believe that we can easily find something for you, sweet darling.”

The rest of the meal was delicious, as was the source of the conversation. Lexi couldn’t believe how easy it was to talk to Xander despite having known him only a few days. Sure, they’d had sex, but she’d had sex with men who knew even less. Somehow, the sex had helped their relationship blossom, making her feel things she thought were features that would remain solely in romance novels.

The meal was on the house, of course, but Xander left a sizable tip. He asked her if she wanted to explore the city more or return to the palace, and Lexi stifled a yawn.

“That was a lot to ingest for one day,” she said. “I think I want to rest my feet for now. Then perhaps we can explore more together another day.”

He gazed down at her feet, which were adorned in heels at that moment. He cocked an eyebrow and licked his lips, which drove Lexi crazy.

“I will make sure your feet get a good foot rub.”

On the way to the palace, they talked and held hands the entire time. Xander was affectionate, but he wasn’t pushing it. That made Lexi want to jump his bones even more.

She would have loved it if he leaned over to kiss her neck in the car, teasing her until they could find some privacy. But she understood what he was doing; he was leaving the ball in her court to decide what she was comfortable with.

That made her feel more in control, which gave her exceptionally naughty thoughts.

When they got back to the palace, Xander said he had business to tend to but that he would meet her in their room in about an hour. A smile lingered on his face, and she turned her head to him and narrowed her eyes suspiciously.

“What are you up to?”

He motioned toward the stairs with his chin.

“You’ll see.”

Lexi ran up the steps, ready to kick off her heels till another day. She opened the door of the bedroom, not noticing that someone was sitting in the massive chair by the window.

“Hello, little girl.”

Lexi stopped for a minute, not believing her eyes. Sitting in the chair was a redhead with an equally fiery personality. Harper sat in her usual full black suit, rocking back and forth.

Lexi was astonished and elated that her best friend was there. She ran to her partner in crime and wrapped her arms around her neck like it had been years since they’d last seen each other.
