“I would like to invite my sisters over tomorrow to help out with this Harper situation. We don’t have extremely powerful magic on our own, but combined, we could likely send out a location spell.”

Xander listened intently, nodding with curious eyes. He reached for her again, placing a hand on the one she used to lean against the blanket. It was warm and soft, and she breathed deeply at the thought of his body pressed against hers once more.

“I know that must be on your mind a lot. Do you want to talk about it?”

Lexi nearly blurted everything out like word vomit, but somehow, like she was a puppet being controlled by something ethereal, she shook her head.

“I want to focus on us. The engagement party will get my mind off things, especially if my sisters are here to help out.”

Xander nodded quietly.

“Just know, my sweet, that you can talk to me about anything. I know we just met, but I want to be here for you. For anything and everything.”

Xander had a softness about him that was in direct contradiction to the sharp edges of his face. He looked like a wolf, a predator, even when he was in his human form. The teeth behind the lips and underneath the gums were just as sharp, made for thrashing and mangling prey.

And sometimes, they were made for sweet love bites on the inside of her thighs.

Lexi swallowed hard, feeling her throat dry up suddenly. She let his hand linger as she reached for the wine, unable to meet his formidable gaze.

“I appreciate that, Xander. I really do. I promise that having my sisters with me will help me with all of this.”

Xander gave her a penetrating look, one that wasn’t exactly aggressive, nor was it inviting. She dared to glance at it briefly. It was like flicking one’s eyes at the sun.

Lexi didn’t want to admit it, but it bothered her that she was falling for him. When he let his hazel eyes with canary yellow sparks linger on her, she felt like he was looking into her head, like a child looking into a well.

It wasn’t fair that he was a full shifter, and she was half. He was far more in touch with his wolf’s intuition and knowledge and also the desires of his wolf. She barely knew her own wolf. It was like a faint whisper in a loud room.

She gave him a genuine and sweet smile as she poured the last of the wine they had been sipping into their glasses. She was a touch buzzed but thought the last bit of it might help with the nerves.

“Thank you, Xander. I feel that from you already.”

There was a silence between them that spoke volumes, and she knew that he wanted to kiss her. She wanted it, too, but she was stuck between a place of fear and a feeling of wonder. She didn’t want him to think anything was off, though she thought he likely detected something in her energy. Clearly, he had, or he wouldn’t have asked her how she was feeling about Harper.

Xander leaned forward, touching her chin as she held the goblet of wine in her hand. She froze at such a tender touch with such striking implications.

“May I kiss you?”

His voice sent a chill up her spine, one that felt like feathers tickling her insides. She licked her lips and then pressed them against his without a word.

A groan emitted from the back of her throat that she had no control over. The wind brushed through her loosened braid and over her skin, causing it to break out into goosebumps. Their lips remained sealed, but the intensity wasn’t limited. It was just as astonishing as when they had first made out in his office.

A plump pop sounded as he removed himself from her mouth, grinning mischievously as he lingered close.

“I could kiss you all day,” he murmured, “and still, I would never tire of your taste.”

Lexi swooned, unable to conceal her attraction one bit.

“Is that so?” she teased.

“Uh-huh.”

Lexi placed her glass of wine down and let her body flow into his. She took him by the collar and kissed him again, hard this time, but she wanted to hold off making love in the field of wildflowers, as devastatingly romantic as it would be.

She would welcome the release of the tension, but he could easily fool her with his skills in the bedroom. So she parted her lips for him slightly, sliding her tongue around the inside of his wet goodness, but pulled away before he had the chance to tuck her arms under his waist.

“We should get back soon,” she whispered. “I would like to contact my sisters as soon as I can.”

“Indeed, we should.”
