“Always,” he whispered.

Xander stepped away with the other kings, remaining in the room with their glasses of whiskey. No one spoke as the sisters joined hands in a circle and closed their eyes, the only sound the faint rumbling of approaching thunder.

It had been some time since the sisters had done a joint spell. Their mother didn’t have access to her abilities, so they had to go by detection of energy all on their own. Once, when they were children, they lost a pet rabbit on the vast landscape of the palace property. The young girls banded together and performed a location spell they’d read about in the royal library and successfully found the pet unharmed.

Lexi tried to use the warmth and positivity of that memory to send energy through the interlocking of her sisters’ hands. It was important that each of them uses a vital memory from the past, one with a good outcome and favorable vibrations. They breathed deeply, keeping Lexi as the center focus since she was the one closest to Harper.

Taryn spoke the spell in Latin, swaying back and forth as the energy began to build.

Lexi closed her eyes with her sisters, swaying along in one form like the waves crashing against the shoreline.

“Magna Mater, inveniat nos soror nostra anima nostra, mittens lumen sanationis, mitte amorem et absolutionem!”

All of the sisters except Lexi began to chant the same phrase as they swayed in a single electric form. Lexi did everything she could to focus and hone the image she was searching for in her mind’s eyes, like cleaning a dirty windshield.

“Magna Mater!” Addisyn yelled.

“Inveniat nos soror nostra anima nostra!” Madison continued.

The chant found a pattern, and it was then that Lexi found her groove. The trance was crawling up her spine like a delicate, healing touch. It skimmed up her back and nestled in the nape of her neck as soft and enticing as Xander’s mouth. Lexi used that energy to sink into the trance further, like being completely engulfed in a warm bath.

Suddenly, all of her muscles tightened, and a flash snapped in front of her face like cameras clicking. The sight was as clear as she was going to get, and she did everything within her power to zoom in on the sight and memorize the features.

Lexi spoke, feeling her eyes rolling back as she described what she was seeing.

“A cave, dark, damp,” her voice trembled and stuttered. “Harper’s limbs, tied together, not far …”

She tried to hold onto the image, but it was slipping away. She gripped it tightly in her mind like holding onto a rough thread of rope, repeating what she saw aloud to keep the memory fresh.

“A cave, dark, damp, not far, Harper tied up …”

Then just like that, the image vanished. It escaped out of her lungs like a possession, and she threw her head back, breathing out the excess energy of the boost her sisters had given her in order to access the spell.

Lexi breathed out until her lungs felt like deflated balloons. She became dizzy, letting go of her sisters’ hands, and nearly smacked down onto the carpet floor.

But Xander was there, just like he said he would be, as were her sisters, holding her arms, with Xander keeping her balanced at her waist.

“We got you,” he whispered.

Lexi felt light-headed. It was a familiar sensation. As she was guided by her king and sisters to the loveseat, she recalled how she felt when they located their dear rabbit. It was a fatigued sense of relief, like she was high.

“Let’s get her some tea and something to eat,” Madison said.

Xander ordered the servants to get a collection of snacks and earl gray as he rubbed her lower back. She was still trying to keep the image in her head, fearful of losing it once she lost consciousness.

“A cave,” she muttered. “Do you know of anything like that nearby?”

Xander nodded. “I will head out with Declan and his enforcers. The rest of you will stay here and rest where it’s safe.”

“No, I’m coming.”

Lexi felt adamant, despite the post-dozy effect of the spell. Harper was her friend, and she needed to know she was going to be okay.

“Honey,” Taryn said, stroking her baby sister’s face. “You’ve just been through a location spell after not doing it for a decade. Plus, Harper wouldn’t even want you to put yourself in harm’s way, right?”

Lexi looked at her sister, so wise and gentle, then at Xander. He gave her a small, sweet smile, one that made her heart sing into eternity.

She sighed, submitting to herself. “You’re right. I just want her to be fine.”
