At one point, he could bear the casual talk no longer. He excused them both before he spun her around and pulled her close. He led them into the middle of the ballroom and began to dance with her in a wide-sweeping waltz.

She looked like she was having a wonderful time, but Xander would give anything to see into her mind at that moment. She broke the comfortable silence.

“So, tell me about your kingdom … I mean, our kingdom, I guess?”

Xander let out a small chuckle. This was going well.

“Well, obviously, we have the obsidian mines and provide the realms with precious stones. Our terrain is not very different from your own, but our people are used to living in a certain level of luxury,” he began.

He paused, reflecting.

“We’re a little more modernized than your parents’ kingdom … we have our little town with shops, dance halls, the usual. We cater to all kinds. But the shining star is the backcountry. Miles of open fields and acres of wildflowers. I’m excited for you to see that. It’s almost as beautiful as you.”

A small blush crossed Lexi’s cheeks, and he was enthralled. Every moment, he was more attracted to her. Everything she did unleashed a new strike of desire he had to keep at bay.

“And you, my bride, are absolutely stunning tonight. So, while we have a moment to ourselves, please tell me about yourself.”

Her blush deepened from a gentle pink to a crimson red. “I love reading. Immersing myself in different worlds and different cultures. I think that’s the same reason why I love to be outside in the gardens. The living creatures, plant or animal, are their own world, and I find it fascinating.”

She paused for a moment, deep in thought, before admitting the next part. “My sisters and I didn’t have many friends, so we grew up really close with each other. I love them dearly. Nothing would stop me from protecting them or anyone I love.”

Please, let that be me,he thought to himself.

How could it not be? She’s our mate, his wolf questioned.

Xander ignored his wolf’s comment. “I also love nature and its beauty. I love to surround myself with it. This makes your companionship ideal,” he remarked to her.

She shifted her gaze away with a sweet smile. What he wouldn’t do to insure he sees that smile every moment for the rest of their lives. She was everything.

As much as he had enjoyed their dance, he had to stop spinning her around the room before he couldn’t see straight anymore. His head spun with the delight of her.

Instead, they continued to make their way around the room, talking with others. Watching her mingle, talk, and laugh was making his wolf howl. He ached to claim her, to mate with her, and complete the bond between them.

He needed her like he needed air to breathe. She was the perfect woman to be his mate, his wife, and his queen.

The night rolled on with little variation. Xander and Lexi danced, they mingled among other guests, and he made it clear to all male passersby that she was his. He did not hesitate to let the whole realm know it.

He would never love another the way he loved her already.

“You’re coming home with me tonight,” he had declared.

“Don’t I get a say in this?”

His gaze had indicated it was best not to argue. And so she found herself upstairs in her room, packing for a late-night departure.

She rolled her eyes, annoyed by the demand. She knew Xander was a man of structure and order, but already he was bossing her around. Her original plan had been to travel to his palace at her leisure tomorrow.

Still, he was to be her husband, and she should honor and respect his wishes. He was the alpha king, after all.

She took a slow walk around her room, touching the familiar items. It was exciting to start her new journey, but this was the last moment she would make a decision that only affected herself. The last time she didn’t need to think of anyone else.

“That is fragile. Please wrap it well. Oh! Please make sure that it is delivered with care. It’s irreplaceable.” She fretted over her belongings, even knowing that her father’s staff had it well in hand. She watched helplessly as her artwork, her favorite books, and her journals from over the years were all packed into boxes.

Her whole world was changing.
