Jennifer's eyes welled up, but she quickly looked down and seemed to compose herself. When she looked up, I could see she was doing her best to focus on the facts at hand.

“If you find the proposed terms that worrisome, then we should have a lawyer look at it, right? So don't worry, but I think it's a good deal.”

“Me too,” I agreed. “Better than I could have ever hoped for.”

“Now,” she said, that twinkle back in her eyes. “About Daniel. Why are the vibes… weird? Maybe they're not bad, weird vibes, but maybe more intriguing, weird vibes.”

I felt my face turn red.

“Well, I guess you're right. I kind of feel some attraction to him, but… I just can’t ever go there.”

“Why?"

“Because he's arrogant and rude and annoying.” I said finally. “It’s like feeling attraction toward an eel.”

“That bad?” she asked, voice rich with laughter.

“Well, maybe not that bad,” I conceded, smiling. “But almost.”

“Well, dear, why don't you wait and see if your eel turns into a prince?”

I snorted. “Prince, my ass. More like an even slimier moss thingy.”

“Whatever that is. I see your mind's made up. Let's see how you feel about him in a month.”

“The same, I bet,” I said immediately, yet my traitorous heart couldn't help thinking, replaying his deep voice talking about my smart mouth. My mind couldn’t stop spiraling in the wrong direction.

I leaned against Jennifer slightly, and she tucked her head into my chin, leaning back. After a while, she nudged me slightly.

“Is that all? I can tell something else is bothering you.”

“It's Susan and James. They've been calling. I didn't answer, of course. So now, they're bothering Cassie.”

“Why not? Do you not want to talk to them?”

“Honestly, I don't know. I don't miss them or anything. I'm perfectly fine. I've always been fine without them. They neglected me for more than half my life. So, if they feel neglected by me now, maybe that's just fair.”

She gave me a soft smile.

“I think it's the other way around. They feel guilty for neglecting you and are now trying to make up by being more present.”

“Well, they don't have to. I'm okay without them. They've made their bed.”

“But you know how life is, right? You never know until you know. And you don't want to regret anything.”

“I guess not. But there's just always so many negative vibes whenever I visit them. Too many memories and unnecessary guilt.”

She drew me into a hug. “It gets better, my dear. You just have to start by confronting them.”

I nodded and wrapped my arms around her, too.

“And I mean the memories, not your parents.” She added dryly.

“Enough confrontation there already,” I laughed. “Can I stay the night?”

“Let me fix up your old bedroom for you,” she said with a final, tight squeeze.
