“Of course, honey,” Palmer’s mother said.

“Elizabeth’s turn,” Camilla repeated.

“I opened my gifts, Cami,” Elizabeth said sweetly.

“There’s one more, actually,” Palmer said, passing her a red-and-green gift bag with gold tissue paper. “This one’s from me.”

“You got me a gift?”

“You gotmea gift,” Palmer reminded.

“Open it! Open it! Open it!” Camilla clapped again.

“Okay. Okay.” Elizabeth laughed and looked inside the bag, pulling out the paper. “What is it?”

“Just read the first page,” Palmer suggested, leaning into her.

“My Time with a Queen?”

“I’ve been writing it since the day I met you. I thought you might like to read it,” Palmer explained. “It’s all the stuff I couldn’t or didn’t want to include in the piece for the paper.”

Elizabeth turned to her and asked, “This is about you and me?”

Palmer nodded and said, “Yeah. I had it printed for you and bound.”

“Palmer, this…” Elizabeth stared down at the document again.

“Is boring,” Camilla concluded. “You got her paper?”

“Camilla,” her father said.

“She wrote her a story, Cami,” her mother explained.

“Can you read it to us?” Camilla asked then.

“Actually, kiddo, this one is just for Elizabeth and me, but I’ll write you another one, okay?”

“Can it be aboutmemeeting a Queen?”

“Sure.” Palmer laughed.

CHAPTER 33

“Hey, Palmer?” Elizabeth asked.

“Yeah?” Palmer turned to her.

“Can I borrow you for a minute?”

“Just a minute. We’re watchingA Christmas Story,” Camilla said, glaring at Elizabeth.

“I’m not her favorite anymore, am I?” Elizabeth asked Palmer, who’d moved to stand next to her.

“She just gets hyper-focused on things sometimes. It’s fine. What’s up?”

“Can we go into the greenhouse?”

“Yeah, let me grab my coat,” Palmer replied. “And donotmake fun of me; it’s cold on the way there.”
